Happy Easter everyone ! First off I am in Afghanistan and my wife wants a 4th gen Runner. Is there anything that we need to look for ? I have heard that they may need a timing belt and the valves adjusted at 100,000 miles or is that for the 8cyl ? I will be on the phone with here while she looking at it. I might be biased, but i own 2 V8-4th gens and i prefer them to the V6. Both however are Pretty solid (as long as you maintain them!). The V8 does need a timing belt replacement at 90k (as should the water pump be changed and all the fluids and gear lube). The V6 has a chain, but for me, ill make the investment if it means that youre almost getting a new engine sotospeak.
The most common issues on both kinds of Runners are frozen caliper pistons, some potential bubbling/rusting under the weatherstripping, same along the sunroof (moonroof) hardware, the 4-Lo actuator leaking, the V8 has some reports of a cracking of the manifold, the V6 has had reports of headgasket probs.

You can also run the VIN on the toyota owner's site to see all maintenance done at toyota dealerships and it's free.
If it's 4WD, make sure it easily switches into 4LO as it is an expensive repair if it isn't working properly.
Make sure she does a test drive as well!

Thanks everyone. Yes, we are looking for the 6cyl. 2wd we have no reason for the 8. I did not know about the Toyota website, I will do that for sure. She has already test drove an 07 Limited 2wd and she really likes the way it drives. So I am sure very soon we will be a 2 4Runner family. Thanks again everyone !

My 4th gen (V6) is my third 4Runner. I've had a 2nd gen '90 (sold to a friend with over 205,000 miles and he currently has 395,000 miles), a 3rd gen '00 (sold with 152,000 miles in cherry condition only because I struck a killer deal on my current 4th gen). All 3 V6's and used to tow campers and boats. The 4th gen is well up to the task and is quite peppy for a 4.0L V6 in a small truck frame.
I have 68,000 miles on my 4th gen and haven't had any of the issues reported. The only head gasket issues I was aware of in 4Runners were with the 2nd gen's.
I've also owned 3 other Toyotas totaling close to 600,000 miles all together. You can't beat Toyota reliability and longevity.
