Buying a '94 4Runner, any specific problems/recalls I should be looking for?

Peter, I can't believe you forgot to mention that the 2nd gen is also prone to roll overs under extreme conditions.

On the more serious side, here is a link that talks about some common ask questions about 4Runners, including head gaskets, sagging butt, poor gas mileage & power from the 2nd generation V6 and some other concerns. By the way, a 94 4Runner is a 2nd generation model.

I bought the 4Runner, six hours later i already had it stuck . A friend pulled me out in no time. I now understand the underpowered complaints but its not too bad. As for rust there wasn't too much. I love the truck already . Pics to come in a day or two. Thanks for all the help and making me an informed buyer. Most of all, thanks for answering all my questions.

Head rests

About those head rests...just about anything will fit. A friend had his stolen out of his `95 Celica so I gave him 2 from my spare `87 4Runner and I`ve got 2 form an `02 Solara in my `88 4Runner. I`ve also put some `04 Lexus 330 head rest in my `88 4Runner, but they were uncomfortable.

How did I get her stuck? A buddy of mine (he was driving his 4wd pathfinder) and I went to a place we'd never been for some mudding. It was all dry as a bone, just a dry mudfield until all of the sudden my buddy was stuck, looked like his back was just in a little ditch. He put it in 4wd and pulled right out. At this point i decided to show him how a little ditch wouldnt stop a 4Runner . The cute girl in the seat next to me didn't help either... so i went around him and tried to go through.... turns out it was a mudhole in disguise and the front of the 4Runner just sank up to the bumper. The right rear wheel was also slipping so no luck with 4wd... A quick trip to walmart and one tow cable later I was out. Next time we will check it out in the daylight. Now 24hrs after owning the truck its completely covered in mud... sunroof included.

Thanks for the headrest info, I'll try and hit up a salvage yard next week.

Do the 2nd gens also benefit from extending the rear diff breather? Assuming I do more mudding that seems like perhaps the first mod I should do.
