Buying Advice - Color and KDSS

I have been shopping for a 4Runner for a while now and working with my local dealer to find what I am looking for. I started looking for a 2016 Trail Premium with KDSS in white. Fast forward to now, they have looked and there are less than 5 in a 750 mile radius and none of the dealers will give them up. He was able to get a black one with KDSS which is my second choice. They can locate a white non-KDSS and get that for me. Time to choose but I don't know which is more important, color or KDSS. Future plans are a slight lift and some mild off roading/trails. White is the better looking and easier color in my opinion but those who have KDSS seem to love it. Please share your experiences/opinions to help me solve my first world problem.

Only you can determine what's important to you, maybe you're not ready to buy if you're not sure? Also, if you can find the truck you want and deal directly, that's probably your best chance at a good deal.
 
White doesn't show pinstripes near as much as anything else. I love my KDSS. Stick with what you want and wait till you get it. Tell your dealer you will only buy a white with KDSS and they eventually will make it happen.

Findone of those five dealers. Call them directly. Get what you want. Have the dealer pick you up at the airport.
 
Having driven a TEP / TRDORP with KDSS before settling on my Pro, I can tell you that I felt that the KDSS ride was stiffer (less body roll) during cornering, but only VERY slightly (vs. the Bilstein setup on the Pro).

I think it depends on what you're actually going to do with your ride right off the bat. If you're going to DD / light offroad it, then keep the stock suspension and go with the KDSS- get a set of good A/T tires on her and rock that b**** hard (if you're curious about the capabilities of stock with KDSS, check out [MENTION=129593]MTN4RNR[/MENTION]). If you plan to replace the suspension / add rock sliders / bumpers / winch, etc., it probably pays off more to have the color you want because the KDSS can get in the way, and a stiffer aftermarket suspension will correct a lot of body roll.

BUT- the most important piece of advice I can give you is to wait for exactly what you want and don't let that down payment / trade in burn a hole in your pocket before you find it.

Thanks for the replies so far! I am in SW Missouri. I have tried looking but have been unable to er a deal worked out on the ones I've found. My local dealer is great to work with and who I bought my Tacoma from. They're giving me above what I want for trade in and far more than other dealers have offered. I agree with waiting but my options are growing thin. Patience is a virtue and not one I have. Ha!

Kdss only gits in the way if you go long travel.
 
In my opinion, it comes down to how you drive. If you want to corner faster with less body roll, wait and find what you want. If you will drive it like an SUV most of the time, save the money on the KDSS. My 2 cents after owning a KDSS trail for a year. I love it, but I'm sure I'd be just as happy without it.

By the way, I have a black '08 highlander. My last black vehicle ever if I can help it.
 
Have you ever owned a black vehicle? Because f uck a black vehicle, they look great when clean and polished but about 15 minutes after you're done detailing it looks terrible. I don't know why I bought 2 black vehicles in a row, but I'm not making that mistake ever again.

White w/KDSS here. Drove both, kdss rocks. At the time...it only cost me $1000 more since Toyota had a $750 keep it wild savings by ordering it with kdss.

DO IT!
 
All good points. I just got an update from my dealer and they may have found me one. Fingers crossed! Looking forward to joining the 4R group officially one way or another!

2007 SR5 considering purchase seeking advice

Hey everyone I'm new to this group and just want to say I'm grateful for all the info. I'm also looking to make a purchase and have a few questions. Any advice is appreciated in advance.

I'm going to look at an 07 4Runner sr5 tomorrow original owner 127k miles. Immaculate condition. It's in great shape and well taken care of. Owner wants 9k.

Is that a good deal?

If I take good care of it, how long should the motor run before I have to do any major work?

What should I look out for when I comb everything over tomorrow?

I really like my KDSS. Drives like a sports car on windy roads. I had several dealers near me and one was way better than the others. Once I met a salesperson that wasn't slimy and he wasn't able to find the 4runner I was looking for I let him have my phone number and a few weeks later he sent me pics of my the TEP that arrived that I know own. If possible just wait for next month's shipment. In my area it was around the middle of the month. Good luck, you're going to love it.

Last I knew from living in Tulsa and trying to get a KDSS truck, not a one of the Gulf State Toyota dealers would even order one with KDSS. Having driven an SR5 and a Limited w/X-REAS, the difference was noticeable, and I knew that I wanted KDSS. Even today I wouldn't trade it for anything available sooner or cheaper. Spending $40k on a truck meant that anything I wanted was not optional.

I ended up dealing directly with a dealer in Montana to obtain a Silver KDSS TEP and paying to ship it down to myself. This was still cheaper than having a local dealer order one, paying MSRP and waiting 5-6 months for it to arrive. Also before TRD Pro was an option, hence I can't speak to that suspension and whether it will satisfy your needs. I suggest you deal directly with other dealers, even if it means paying to go get the truck yourself, or someone else to ship it to yourself. It may mean selling your Taco private party, which you likely would get a little more for it than the dealer is offering.

Personally having KDSS and adding 2" front lift and Air Lift on the rear axle I can say I've had no trouble with the either as of yet. So a mild lift is certainly possible with KDSS, don't let people tell you that it isn't. However, from reading other threads, I'd say 3" is pushing the limit, anything beyond asking for trouble. Oh and stay the hell away from factory remote start, you'll do better and more useful aftermarket.

I have a bit of a colored past with this dealer. Long story short, when I bought my Tacoma from them it had a crazy issue and they went so far above and beyond with their service (service contact is now in sales) that they earned my business for life. It does complicate things a bit but a dealer that is loyal to their customers is almost impossible so I am trying to return that to them.

Plan is for Bilstein 5100s all the way around see at 1.75 in the front and 1" spacer to level out the back. I don't need a big lift or tires for my practical purposes. I think this should be an almost idea setup for the vehicle and my intended use.

I think that I will hold out for a white with KDSS if at all possible. We will see if my patience runs out before then!

If the dealer thing doesn't work out for you I know where there is a 2016 TEP White with KDSS, trail boards and cross bars with 1200 miles on it that is 4 months old. Oh and it doesnt have the clunk and it sets level. Pm me if interested.
