Buying this 4runner +pics

Hey everyone, just joined up to ask a question that hopefully some of you will know the answer to. Hopefully this is the right section, if not please move it.

I've recently come across a 1999 4runner with 123k miles on for about 9 thousand dollars. Really clean truck, but one thing stuck out to me when looking at it's carfax, it has had 6 owners.

All the service records seem up to date and everything, but does 6 owners seem like a lot to anyone else? I know it's a 10 year old vehicle, but something seems odd.

If anyone has any knowledge on what this could mean please share.

That's not only a lot of owners, but for another $2k (give or take) you can find a 4th gen with less miles. (i.e., 2003+)

Some people like 3rd Gens more than 4th Gens.

I don't know why there would be so many owners. Maybe a few leases?

Well, there are a lot of variables here. Is it a dealer or by owner, limited, SR5 or basic model, 2 WD or 4WD, what part of the country and I could go on.

99's can go for $6000 here, but I have seen them higher than $9000.

As far as the 6 owners go, that does seem high. I would be a little concerned someone didn't fall in love with it, so to speak. I guess I would be a little concerned myself.

Actually to be honest, I liked the 3rd gen's better at first. I had never seen a 4th gen modded before this site, so when comparing their stances when they are both stock, the 3rd gen has a nicer stance. But I didn't want to buy used, and I had enough to pay cash for a new, fully loaded sport edition.

I totally understand. I'm not saying the 4th Gens aren't nice. Hell I'd love to have a lot of their features.

I don't think that this 4runner is $3,000 too much, but we need some info like peter said. Pictures of body condition, etc. would be good.

Carfax sucks and is not accurate. It could have 6 owners but it may not show accidents, repairs etc.

What condition is it in. Better have brakes replaced recently, new timing belt, water pump, Belts and tires etc.

Shift into 4hi and 4lo. Check all the fluids for age.

Retail value at Kbb.com for your truck is 8k if in excellent condition. Check it out at Link to KBB

In this market, it is a buyer's market. Offer 7k out the door (includes everything, tax, tags etc.) or walk away.

It looks to be in good shape, at least visually. The mileage is pretty good for a 99. The seats look to be a upgrade from the standard seats. If you really like it after the test drive, I'd have a good mechanic look at it.

If you decide to get it, I think you will really like it. One thing, see if the timing belt has been replaced, that is if you can.

I agree there are many variables. I have seen 98's for sale with asking prices of 8-9 grand too and they were 4wd SR5 and Limited models. If you watch these listings you will notice that most are sitting for a long time and are being sold by dealers. You will also see the price drop continuously. I sold my 98 limited last year (Sept) for 5 grand. It needed a new rear bumper due to rust. Other than that it was in good shape including new tires. 130k miles.

Prior to listing my truck I watched many Craig's list listings as well as ebay and cars.com listings. If you take the time to do your research and have patience you can really find some great deals out there.

I would shop private party sales and have a mechanic look over the vehicle prior to buying.

I would not worry about the price , concerned about the 10 owners. See where the 10 owners are from as far as proximity , has it traveled around the country.

I think the price is ok , 3rd GEN'S My personal favorite , go for much more in clean mint condition here. Same way with 4th Gens , I went to look at about 6 of them 05's , that my local dealer had a blowout sale at a near fair park and with shopping for used values to see if my lease is worth the buyout and saw nothing in that range for under $23K for SR5's . They seem to hold good value here and on the 4R I've really not seen a very big drop in used Toyotas. Domestic ... whole different story.

Price is all in the eye's of the beholder .

Can someone post a picture of the little shelf in the back of the 4runner where you keep the jack and stuff? Just need to see the layout because the jack doesn't seem to fit snug inside.

On my 3rd gen, the stock jack goes under the passenger side rear seat.

Well maybe you should of made a separate thread. On the 3rd generation model, the jack is under the rear seat. It is not in a shelf. There is a compartment in the rear on the right that is empty.

The 4th gen. has a jack compartment in the left rear and it has another compartment in the right rear that is empty.

Let me know what you are talking about and post a new thread, either in the 3rd or 4th gen. sub-forum and I will post a picture of what you are talking about.
