Buzzing noise from near rear axle??

Tonight I was doing some stuff in the driveway, when suddenly a buzzing noise started coming from the underside of my 2016 4Runner. It sounds like a small pump or something, and seems to be coming from somewhere in the vicinity of the rear axle. Here's a video:

The vehicle had been parked for 6 or 7 hours. What could be making this noise, and why would it be doing this when the vehicle is just sitting there??

Yup, really threw me off too! Awesome website by the way, I'm glad our paths crossed. Looks like you had a Trooper? We had a first gen. Trooper back in the early 90's and it was a great truck, really comfortable seats. Hopefully the 4Runner will provide you with relatively trouble-free ownership going into the future, it's a big reason I'm driving one. I'm sure you know but there's few vehicles that compare to it these days. I'll have to spend some more time going through your adventures too, I'm up in northern California but already have a few trips planned to ghost towns in Nevada and southern California. Goodluck!

Thanks! My last three vehicles were all Troopers. Bought my first one in 1987. So far I'm very happy with the 4Runner, and I'm looking forward to putting it to the test when I go on my annual Nevada trip later this week.

I have noticed the same buzzing sound near the rear axle - unfortunately I can't find this reference in the FAQs or on the forum - perhaps I am searching incorrectly. Would really like to read up on this to understand what it is and what causes it.

Go to the 4th link under FAQ. If I were you I would read ALL the sticky threads. You will learn a lot and get questions answered you haven't even thought of yet.

Each subforum (general, 3rd gen, 5th gen, etc) has generation specific informational threads "stuck" to the top of the first page. When I make changes I usually put a question out to the general membership about what they would like. Sometimes though, as in the case of the guy that is doing a solid axle swap (SAS), there is a thread that is too cool and needs to be stickied. Also when someone is going on an "epic trip" I will temporarily sticky that thread so people can follow along.
