Buzzing Sound coming from evap canister with ignition off and key out

Sorry still new here; got a question. My T4R has a buzzing sound coming from under the hood, and I have narrowed it down to the evap canister. I have the ignition off, key out, and vehicle is locked. I have noticed it recently, I have only owned my runner for about a month. Just wondering if that is normal or if I have an issue. I have not had any issues, the battery is holding a charge, and I only drive every couple of days. It is not a daily driver. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

It's normal.

The '96 I had did it.
My Wife's '97 does not.

Took it to the dealer ( 8 years or so ago ) before I found these great sites, and they checked it out. They said it was normal purging of the canister.
Don't worry about it.

Their was a service bulletin for this back in '97 and there is a $20-30 part to fix it. Problem is, the part was discontinued. I started a thread on YT a while ago and Jacque from trdparts4u.com found me one. I'd try calling him because the part is cheap and takes <15 seconds to install. Here's my thread:

Yeah, he can't help now either. I called him when I bought my '96 last fall and it was doing it, and he said it's a no go at this point. Just have to live with it.

We're here to please. What am I saying, I'm a relative noob as well.

You can alleviate the problem by taking the gas cap off once you park. Whenever I'd pull in my garage I'd always loosen the cap and leave it loose, because I could hear the buzzing from my kitchen and it drove me nuts, lol. Just don't take the cap off and forget about it!

I tried to loosen my gas cap before I got the fix but it didn't work for me. If you guys wanna make your own, it would be relatively simple. It's just a plastic box about 1/2 the size of a fist that basically adds another chamber to trap the gases. I'll post a pic of what the factory one looks like if you want me to.

Please do. My brother has the '96 now, but he's better than me at making stuff anyway, so it wouldn't surprise me if he fixed it. And a picture would help.

Since the Toyota part is no longer available, this at least shows the parts needed and how to fix it. If you just make some sort of little box like that, maybe it will work.

My only question is: what does in look like inside that little box? Are there baffles? Or is it open, or what?

It looks fully open, but it's hard to see all the way in there. I believe it's only to give more volume for expansion so I highly doubt there are baffles in there. It would be easy to make one yourself since the part is NLA.

Edit: Mine was made in 7/96 though ('97 model) so it may be ones that were manufactured during '96 and before.

Dealing with the parts department at my local dealership is hilarious. He told me I should just buy another evap canister ($400.) I said, but that won't solve the problem and he said...yeah...LMAO! He suggested I buy the hose and see if we get lucky and the discontinued part comes instead?? Needless to say, I'm not holding my breath.

I asked him if he could just call the parts warehouse and they could look at it and tell us if it's the discontinued part. No, that's not possible. Apparently the place is run by a bunch of blind robots?

I wish I had access to one of these. It looks to be a great candidate for a 3D printed knockoff.

Oh well, I probably won't hear the buzzing after another month or so.

ANY little dead air space will do. I used a mustard tin because I had it laying around and a couple of hose barbs and that's all it took. It doesn't need to be as big. The fix cost me less than $3:

I just happened to have this tin laying around. It was really about a half inch too tall and could have been a half inch wider but there's wiggle room so it works out. If I hadn't found the metal nipples cheap I would have been fine with plastic, whatever allowed the hose to connect to the tin.

So there you go. My take on the moo box fix.
As far as a new evap canister goes it will not work. Out of curiosity I swapped the non-mooing canister out of my 99- it started buzzing in the 96. The 96's box stopped buzzing in the 99.
