I was under the back of my 4runner and heard a buzzing sound somewhere above the spare i think, couldn't identify it or locate it... it was not running and keys were not in ignition. any idea what that was? it went for a minute maybe a little more then i started it let it run for 30sec and shut it off, and the buzzing had stopped...concerned.

Yeah, its the fuel pump. Purging or something, I cant remember exactly. But its normal, happens a few hours after you shut off the ignition.

It's the fuel evaporation leakage check.

It's in your owners manual in a couple of places and there been a bunch of threads on it.
Search-Advanced Search-Keyword(Noise)-Threads -5th Gen T4R's and there were 38 hits .....a bunch of them asking about this same noise.
Here's a few.....

Hmm, I was coming to the forum to ask this question and here it was already. The other night, my wife popped her head into the garage to throw something in the recycle bin and heard a buzzing noise. She asked me what it was. I have an outdoor light timer that makes a faint buzzing noise and thought it was that. But as I tracked the noise down, it was coming from underneath the rear of the 4R above the spare tire. Had no idea what was causing it. Don't know if it was just good timing or what, but I opened the rear hatch and closed it back and the noise stopped.

Bottom line, I'm assuming from this thread, that it's normal and we'll hear it from time to time if we're listening?

I actually took my 2010 Limited back to the dealership w/ the complaint of the buzzing after a few hours of being off. It took them 4 Hours of testing the rig out and finally the lead tech brought me the info from their service manual what he thought it was. He had info on the Leak check, it is not the fuel pump but a Vaccum pump that comes on brings the system to a negative pressure then waits a few minutes and checks for a deviation in pressure change if none then every thing good.

Now, a week after, the 4Runner threw a code. I have to take the dam thing back in.
