Buzzing Sound

Hi,

I have an '88 4 runner and I want to remove that horrible buzzing sound from the dash when you have your keys in and open the door.

I tried looking for it when I had the dash apart this summer but couldn't find where the hell it came from.

Does anyone know what it is/looks like/where I can find it so I can remove or replace it with something a little better sounding?

It's under the dash, to the right of the steering column, next to the clutch/brake pedal bracket. It's a black box and once you remove it the dome light will no longer come on when you open the drivers door. I'm sure if you look at the wiring diagram, that could be resolved with a jumper wire.

erm, easily fixed, and keep the dome light on!!!

Get that black box hes talking about, take it out, it kind of slides off, disconnect the harness from it, take ir apart, there are two metal things and I believe a oil if I remember... Bend the metal piece back and it wont make anymore noise.

The two metal pieces vibrate off each other to produce noise, I did it and works perfectly

So if I bend one of the metal parts it'll stop making noise? Or do I have to bend both pieces of metal?

I just did this mod on my 84 4Runner, remove the black box as mentioned above and take it a part, you will see a small coil that makes the noise, just bend the piece that vibrates a way from the coil and that will kill the noise when the door is open.

its a little plastic square box, its not bolted, it slides on a metal bracket thingy. I have no pictures sorry. Look up under where all the petals are. No need to remove dash or anything.

that is the best Mod ever. i couldnt stand that buzzer but still wanted the lights to come on. its really easy too. i think that was my first "mod" to my 4runner

On my '86 I did a mod to keep the buzzer working on all non-door functions, but silence it when the door was open.

Behind the driver's side kick panel there is a wire connector where you can disconnect the door switch (same on passenger side. I simply disconnected the switch, and ran a wire across underneath the dash to the passenger side switch. Effectively making the truck think that the passenger door was open when the driver's side door is open, thus powering on the dome light, but not the buzzer. This also keeps the buzzer on for seatbelt warnings and any other functions.

yeah, definitely a great little mod. was about to go insane from that buzzing, but I really liked my dome light too.

yep, just those little electric clapper things. which I'd have never figured out without this thread.
