Cabin Air Filter

Replaced my cabin filter on my 2005 w/ 17K miles. The original that I took out was disgusting! See the attached pic. If you look close, there is a small dropping from either a mouse or lizard.

I see you live in Pa so your filter may not get as dirty as mine. Also, in Florida where I live, we have those pesky rodents and reptiles that seem to make their way in everywhere.

how you get to this filter

Open the glovebox. Remove the little plastic shock absorber (right hand side) need short handled Phillips screwdriver. Then grab both sides of the glovebox and squeeze them together to clear the locating pins. Now the glovebox will drop away from the dash consol and access to the filter will be obvious.

I removed my air cabin filter and carefully washed it by hand and let it air dry. It came out like it was new and I reinstalled it.

I'm curious if the stock filters have any electrostatically charged fibers. Washing might make the filter look new but might remove such a charge, thereby rendering the filter useless at trapping small paticles.

I dunno if this is the case or not... just wondering. I washed mine too!

Wow. I checked my cabin air filter this morning and it looked just like AVINCENT's air filter and my car only has 8k miles on it.

Anyone found a charcoal cabin air filter for the 2006 4Runner?

Can these thing be purchased anywhere (Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Wal-Mart, etc.) -- or do you have to get them from the stealership and pay out the wazoo??

I am just turning 12k on my '05 and figure that I ought to put in a new one before I drive it to Florida next month.

I paid $15 for mine at the dealer last month. In the grand scheme of things it's not that bad of an investment. I guess you can always make it yourself but I think of it as an oil change. Change it out every 5000 miles, especially after seeing how nasty mine was after a year of leaving it alone.

I have used these since the first replacement. I buy mine at Canadian Tire for C$19.00+tax. Stealer wants $49 for the OEM replacement with labour.
