cai opinions???

ok guys i have a 2001 sr5 4wd with a trd supercharger kit. any cold air intake suggestions? afe? k&n? whats a good one out there that i should get? thanks again

Removing the silencers from the intake tube is probably the best mod you can do to your intake. Even better than a full after market intake.
 
Silencer removal, deck plate mod and a drop in k&n filter will perform as good if not better than a $500 cai.
 
Cai's are a gimmick, you're not getting ANY cold air unless you install a snorkel. ANY filter, intake etc. that sits inside the engine bay is only going to circulate the hot air inside the engine bay.

actually the OEM intake sucks it's air from a hole in the passenger fender not the engine bay.

Where in Cali are you? I have a K&N cold air in my 4runner right now, I'll swap you for your stock airbox plus cash if you want.

I would just change out intake to an AiRaid with dry filter to delete the silencer, do a deckplate mod and change the muffler to a more free flowing one.
That should be under $300 total.
Will breathe much better both IN and OUT.
 
Anybody have a write up on doing the silencer removal? I'm about to do the deck plate but have not heard a lot about the silencer removal.
 
Cold air suggestion would be route your airflow out of the engine bay with some custom piping and get a good filter. People can bash intakes all day long but at the end of the day nearly all modified cars have an intake other than factory and just because the 4runner does not see gains that people would like to see with a ram air intake, they still do breathe better with some mods. Build your own cold-air box for all it matters. I won't argue with people who claim they are garbage or anyone who dislikes them, they are free to their opinions just like I am. I personally don't have any proof they add or loose power and it's not like I care, it's a mod I do to all my cars usually and if you want to get one, go for it.. I have no problem with the stock airbox though so don't get me wrong, Toyota is a lot smarter than I am when it comes to engineering so their design pulls more cold air than most ram intakes.
 
I installed a homemade kit and wanted more of a factory intake system after awhile, so I went with a Volant CAI. My reason was that my dealer wanted $1200 for the factory CAI system and the Volant was $325. (I had already sold my factory setup.)

My suggestion as I have stated several times is simple. Take the stock 4R to a dyno. Install new mod (IE CAI, deck plate, etc). Go back and compare the two runs. You now have empirical evidence one way or the other. Anything else is just an opinion.

Dyno evidence generally indicates that your money is better spent on the exhaust side than the intake side of things at the end of the day. YMMV and this is just yet another opinion. At the end of the day, it's your truck so do what makes you happy.

They are a gimmick on our truck, but CAI's are not a gimmick overall. If you own a turbocharged or supercharged motor you would understand. It can give 5-10whp on some setups if boosted. And a true CAI will move the filter to the lower part of bumper or fender well for cold air intake but easily can suck in water on a lowered car.
 
Dyno results show a clear 7 HP with a high flow exhaust + K&N CAI.

I don't have the picture handy but it is on their website.

The key is you need to do both together.
