left side is 97% full, right side is 17% full. hopefull the rain that is coming helps more than hurts with the projected mud slides.

I live about 4 miles from the dam and see Folsom Lake water every time I flush the toilet. An upcoming triathlon is being moved from Folsom Lake to Lake Natoma, just downstream, because of the water level. Transition from the water is far too long, uphill and in the sand.

What are they doing there, far below the water high level line.

It looks like they are putting gravestones in ......

Wow. Sad to see. Hopefully rain will be bountiful for the rest of the year.

Nature is an enigma though for the Sahara used to be rich, fertile farmland before the building of the pyramids.

Not that things aren't bad, but it's worth noting that the comparison picture is in late summer on a year the snowpack was nearly 200% of normal, meaning most of that had melted and gone into lakes by then. Here's Squaw's data, which should be similar to the snowpack feeding Folsom. See that they got 810" at 8k (yes, that's 67.5 feet of snow!!!), whereas the average (presumably also at 8k) is 450" (37.5 feet).

Snowfall Tracker | Squaw Valley

This year they're at a measly 13 feet so far. I think the latest was the snowpack measurement was 25% of normal, though we've also had some rain. But we're getting some storms, and the skiing is pretty good now after the storm 2 weeks ago that dropped 5+ feet in the higher elevations. I enjoyed the 6" of fresh powder this morning at Diamond Peak, and most resorts here in Tahoe got more than that.

There was a big article on desalination plants coming online in CA in a couple years. While I dislike that CA spends so much and thus taxes so much, one of the best things they could do is have a "pay for sod" program like Las Vegas does, paying people to rip out their lawn. I know our water usage goes up 400% in summer, and so while dropping a minute on shower time might seem eco friendly, it's just a drop in the bucket compared to getting rid of some more of our grass. OTOH, the shower drain goes to the sewer and is pumped out of the valley, whereas any irrigation that doesn't evaporate or get used by the grass eventually makes it to the lake which is our water source.

Anyway, back to Folsom, the summer of 2011 should have been a high level mark after an exceptional year. Lake Tahoe nearly reached it's maximum allowed limit that summer Lake Tahoe Water Watch | Tahoetopia - Tahoe TV

If you're going to watch a weather report in California .... best to get your news from the Spanish Language Channel. #3 is my favorite.

I've went out to folsom lake many times growing up. Sad to see it that low.

They appear to be pilings, which would strengthen and stabilize an earthen dam.

So I guess CALTRANS or whomever is using this as an opportunity to reinforce the damn dam.

As many of you are not from the Sacramento Region i saw mike4x4 was local. A new State Bill has been in the works for the last 6 months know as the Bay Conservation Plan. My Mother's new Husband (stepdad) is a Lobbyist for the Rural Counties for the State of California. This new Bill which is being pushed by a Southern California Assembly Women is pushing this bill exceptionally hard with her political backing and support. The True Ploy in this scheme is to make her Uncle Rich he is the sole own of Granite Construction who has this Dam Project for 2007-2020 profiting over 1 Billion Dollars. The Dam Project was finished as of 2010 rebuilding the Folsom Dam road. She has since pushed for 50,000 Gallons of water a Day being drained from Folsom Lake and other Northern California water supplies. There is NO DROUGHT in California, we have had less rain then usual but we get a bulk of our rain in the spring. The Lakes in California are being Drained on Purpose so that the water can be sold to Southern California for the equivalent of gas prices. In turn making the City of Folsom extremely wealthy. There is no Drought the City of Folsom is selling all the water down south and has a contract until 2020 and they will drain every single gallon of water out of the lakes as fast as it comes in. Folsom Lake rose 14 feet in 2 days and they drained all the gains in a week! Basically Southern Californians cannot conserve water therefore they have to drain the northern California lakes AKA reservoirs. This could all be solved by 2 simple extremely cheap fixes (1) Build the Auburn Dam its been proposed for the last 10 years its a easy 5 million dollar fix to what they are spending a Billion on currently and it will act as a double reservoir keeping folsom lake what lake natomas is now. Acting as a second spill over. (2) How do 3rd world countries get their water? The extract it from the ocean and purify it. Southern California can setup water refineries for under 10 million and bring in water from the ocean clean it and extract the salt and they have an unlimited water supply but this Senator rather make her family extremely rich and people are trying to stop her but few will speak up!!!

its really crazy to see y'all in the midwest/east coast speak of a drought because truly there is no drought its a fake drought, made by the government so they can sell us our own water back to us at the same rate as gas! NO Joke!!! The funny thing is the lakes the water it all belongs to the citizens and people of california it's public land owned by the people and our government is telling us what to do with it without our permission people need to make a stand this is no joke.

The Crazy thing is they are doing this without consent from the people who voted them into power! Also they have crews working 24/7/365 sunday saturday all day and all night like they have over 10 million in machinery alone just sitting have built special roads, and huge hangers and yards for their equipment alot of the locals I speak with that are in the loop believe their is something deeper going on behind the scenes that we do not know about. all construction sites are fenced off with razor wire and multiple police units at each entry site. Not to mention all the signs that say US Government Property No Trespassing around the lake I walked with in 10 feet of the signs with my Dobermans and my DSLR camera and I had cops confronting me within seconds.

Cal Trans is not working on any of this projects it's all private companies hand selected by this Assembly Women!

I smell something fishy!!!

read those links they will open your eyes especially the second one!

That's interesting I had not heard about that one. To make matters worse don't forget about the delta smelt.

Below is from this website:
The Man-Made California Drought - House Committee on Natural Resources

California’s water storage and transportation system designed by federal and state governments includes 1,200 miles of canals and nearly 50 reservoirs that provide water to about 22 million people and irrigate about four million acres of land throughout the state.

In May 2007, a Federal District Court Judge ruled that increased amounts of water had to be re-allocated towards protecting the Delta smelt – a three-inch fish on the Endangered Species List.

Because of this ruling, in 2009 and 2010 more than 300 billion gallons (or 1 million acre-feet) of water were diverted away from farmers in the Central Valley and into the San Francisco Bay – eventually going out into the Pacific Ocean.

This man-made drought cost thousands of farm workers their jobs, inflicted up to 40 percent unemployment in certain communities, and fallowed hundreds of thousands of acres of fertile farmland.

Unemployment remains at a regional average of 17%. With current precipitation at near-record lows, the same regulations will be imposed pushing unemployment even higher.

The Pelosi-led Congress did nothing to reverse the plight of the San Joaquin Valley and even obstructed repeated Republican actions to reverse the situation. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Water Reliability Act reflects Republican promises to avoid another man-made drought.

Let's move 1/4 of the population of US and Mexico into an arid state and expect it to support that amount of people.

CA has the ability to have plenty of water if it wasn't wasted, we are the largest agriculture state in the country.
But in a Dem controlled state that is strong armed by environmentalists we save useless fish and bugs before we save people.
