Caliper rattles/clanks

I have always noticed that after applying the brakes when reversing, as soon as you apply the brakes going forward, the calipers clank. This same noise happened on my Tacoma too. Now I am getting a clanking sound everytime I apply my brakes going forward. It seems to be getting worse. I put new pads on prior to my trip to Fla. back in May. Any ideas as to why the calipers might me doing this? Is this happening to anyone else? It also now sounds like I am getting a rattle going over bumps in the road too. **sigh**

I've noticed the same thing on my 07 SR5. Not the getting worse part, but the mild clank the first time applied in a new motion direction...curious what it might be.

Sorry I don't have a solution to add...

I notice a similar problem on my 07 SE. I only notice it when reversing. Every time I tap the breaks I hear the "clank". I also just started to notice that the breaks are starting to squeaking the first time I hit the brakes when they are cold. Sorry I don’t have any ideas to help.

i have the same noise and it does sond like calipers but not sure. by the way obx fishing, i have the same model truck and live in obx and would like to se yours one day cause i am looking at doing the same lift. pm me if you want to get together sometime. thanks

Add me to the list with the same noise, only going in reverse, not getting particularly worse. I am in need of a brake job within the next few months, so I'll be asking about that noise when I bring it in.

Have you all had brake pads replaced? aftermarket? When I bought mine it came with new pads and rotors and I had the same problem. The work was done by joe blows garage who wasn't familiar with Toyotas. The T4R pads have a thin shim and clips that need to be installed. It is a kit that does not come with the pads. I brought it to my local dealer and they found these parts were missing. Parts reinstalled and problem solved.

Mine were clicking too after a replacement at the dealership. Turns out the technician put the spring clips on the wrong end of the pads. The result was that when moving forward I'd apply the breaks the pads would slap down on the rotor making the "click". Normally this would only happen when reversing (as you mentioned on the tacoma and 4r). I had them take a look after I heard the problem and they noticed and fixed the issue right away.

DISC QUITE. This is the reason it makes the CLICK noise. Seems like the dealer (for our model) does not include or use this yet when I do brakes on a camry then include the lube with the brake pads. I took mine out and sprayed the disc brake quite spray on the pads as we do with every brake job and away the noise went. Nothing to worry about it is just the brake pad moving/sticking a little bit and hitting the caliper edge. Safely wise you are fine.

Hey i have the same noises you described. The rattle when going over bumps worries me more than the brakes clicking, i took it to my mechanic a few months back but they found nothing. Does anyone know what the rattle noise is?

I removed my front sway bar and that took care of my so called "clanks" everytime I went over a hole or bump in the road. I did this on my Tacoma when I was having the same type of issues and people told me to remove the sway bar and it will go away...and it did and now it works on my 4Runner. If you decide to do this please read up on it first because there is, to some degree, a little bit more body roll going into a curve like when you are exiting the interstate. If you had to make an abrupt move to avoid hitting something or someone then you could loose control unless you know your limitations from the sway bar being removed. Good luck!
