I saw those at the Overland Expo this year. Was pretty impressed with them. and for the fact that you get both a camper AND a utility trailer in this setup, the ~$7k price is pretty darn good.

I looked at their X4 offroad version.

It doesn't have all the built-in fancy options, and with a single layer canvas tent, it may not be the ultimate harsh-climate camper like a solid wall type trailer; but again, for multi-function it's hard to beat.

Speaking of which, I've always wondered why a rtt would be preferable to a tent you could throw in the back of the 4Runner. Why wouldnt one just buy a great Mountain Hardwear or REI tent and call it a day? I just think about how many times I am in and out of our tent on any given trip and can't imagine how ascending and descending a ladder a bunch of times makes that more fun. Nevermind the fact that we usually camp with a 100 lb. German Shepherd. But maybe I'm just missing something all you rtt guys get?

I use your method, but the RTT does have some advatages. Comfort and setup/teardown time seem to be some of the bigger, it takes awhile to pull out my tent, blow up my pads, and unpack sleeping bags and such. for longer road trips they look nice. if i add up the cost of the various tents i have an RTT doesnt seem so expensive.

Multiple reasons to prefer an rtt.
Vehicle can self level on minor uneven ground.
No need to find anchor point if the ground is too soft or too hard.
No need to clear the ground to protect the tent bottom.
Off the ground is sometimes safer.
Often quicker to set up and built in mattress, you can leave bedding inside if you are traveling with it.
Saves space on interior for things you wouldn't put on the roof like food.
Good if the spot of land isn't large enough for a tent, vehicle, and cook area.

Minuses?
Expensive, heavy, hurt gas mileage...

Am I missing something with that Jumping jack? It literally looks like a tent on a trailer. No storage, or utility use what-so-ever. If you're going to use a trailer for off road it needs a serve more of a purpose than a tent platform. I guess you can put stuff on the top, but then you have to remove everything and leave it off while camping.

Personally if I'm going to bring a trailer I want one of the types I can sleep inside and not have to put a tent on top. But at least the other ones are built for storage and utility with the ability to top mount a tent.

Then he says, so he could put a tent up there, then, with that roof rack? I told him yes, but he doesn't. He goes on to say how great rtts are. How they get you out of the dirt, off the ground, have better luck getting a breeze up higher, blah blah blah.

So then I had to tell my husband what I just said on here about how I dont understand the excitement over rtts, at which point I got made fun of.

I say: what about your shoes? Where do your shoes go? I see no vestibule. Let's be reasonable, people! I want dry shoes, and I want to know where the hell they are.

I have solar....although I have it connected to about 10' of cord so I can move it around for maximum exposure. I also will carry a Honda 2000 watt generator if need be.

The trailer also sports a 40 amp Iota converter to charge the 2-6V golf cart batteries.

They all have vestibules available. Extra, but worth it.
You'll have to find a new place for that kayak though.
