I hate vampire taps...

never had anything but problems with them.

Solder & shrinkwrap is much better.

My preferenc whenever possible is to tap into a wire at the nearest connector. Remove the wire's pin from the connector, solder the new wire to the pin's crimp, then reinsert into the connector. Most pins can be pulled if you can get a jewelers screwdriver or VERY small needlenose pliers in to the in

Takes a bit longer but it won't let you down a few months down the road.

I have yet to buy and install the Navigation as I did not find anybody who was close that could do it for me. Actually I have not really looked as I recently got married and my funds have dried up, suprise suprise. I am still interested and live in Hacienda Heights so we are close.

I used the connector your mentioned before and my experience was that they work for a while after you install it (when the connector is new and tight), then eventually vibration of the vehicle will shake it loose and you will loose connection. That's why I'm thinking of soldering it somehow.

I've used them for several years and never had a problem. I think it is important to make sure you have the right size connector for the gauge of wire you're using. If the connector is too big, I could see it loosening up from vibration over time. The metal inside the connnector is supposed to slice through the insulation of the wire and make contact with the wires. If it's done correctly, it shouldn't be a problem.

But I guess there is nothing wrong with soldering the wires if you want to.... you might be better of soldering them without cutting them, which is pretty easy if you just carefully remove part of the insulation.

I live in Santa Monica...I did mine pretty easily. The links here help a lot...If I am off work, and you guys need help, look me up and I can give a hand...

Just remember, the lighting on the NAV unit is green, whereas the dash lights are orange. If you can live with that, then by all means, the NAV is worth every cent. I was crazy enough to take my NAV unit apart and change all the LEDs to orange, but this was a huge PITA as well as RISK of destroying the unit and losing your $$...

You must hook up the speed and reverse sensors for the NAV to work correctly for driving directions (voice directions will not work unless these are hooked up) and when you go into a garage or tunnel (like Lincoln as it goes under LAX...). This is very easy to do...
