Can a 5th gen Limited be a capable vehicle?

In my opinion the Limited is just as capable as the part time 4WD except in the most extreme off-road conditions. Multi Terrain Select, Crawl Control and Rear Differential Locks in the higher end version gives them a few more tricks up their sleeve to to get out of more difficult situation.

However, I think the Limited is better than the part time 4WD when driving in bad weather conditions when on paved roads. Having the ability to switch to AWD is a big advantage in my opinion. It gives you a AWD capability that allows you to drive normally. Even though the part time 4WD can switch to 4WD you alway have to worry about potential binding. And let’s face it, I can say almost everyone here spends more time on paved roads than off roads. So that’s a big plus for the limited.

I have a TRD Off Road but next time around I'll probably get a Limited for these reasons.

The "tricks" like Multi-terrain select, crawl control and rear diff lock are only useful in a very narrow window. In a stock 4Runner, most trails are easily handled in normal 4x4 mode. Some trails can't be handled no matter what. There's a tiny window between these, trails that can only be done when you use these "tricks."

The Limited can pretty much do everything my TRD Off Road can do except trails that require these tricks, and trails that actually "require" them are rare. I turn them on from time to time but in all honesty I would be able get by without them. Plus, the Limited does have ATRAC, and it's pretty darn close to these other tricks, even the rear diff lock. There would be very very few obstacles that you could pass with the "tricks" but not pass with ATRAC.

And the Limited is much better on-road in bad weather conditions. Bad weather conditions are far more common than trails that actually require the tricks.

The big difference between the two is 17" wheels versus 20". If I ever get a Limited I would look into switching to 17's.

Edit: I should add that I would prefer KDSS to XREAS.

Limited's are very capable, they'll get you to the mall and soccer practice with the kids.

Plenty capable, no lockers really necessary using ATRAC, and still looks slick when cleaned up.

Used to offroad it with spacer lift, DuroBumps, and its stock XREAS just fine. Last year I put on Bilstein 6112/5160's (later Ironman FCP rear shocks), Ironman HD rear 2" springs, 1.5" wheel spacers, and Dirt King UCA's for more track width, clearance and load capacity.

you are proof that limited is the only way to go....thar aint a trd on the planet that drive on a virtually 90 degree rock wall and not tip over. are those "special" tires?

He probably filled them up with water like the rock crawlers do for better traction and lower COG.

It is a capable vehicle with no modifications. I have a 2016 Limited that’s lifted, supercharged, etc. and have no issues going anywhere our Landcruiser goes.
