Can anyone ID this transmission?

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a potential 5 speed donor transmission in my area, this truck has been on Craigslist for a few weeks, very rough but it may work for my application: Attempting to swap into my 87 Turbo 4Runner

Can anyone help me ID the model of this transmission?

Truck is a 1987, straight axle swapped, seller claims this transmission was behind a 22R which was "not stock to the truck"

Thanks Sam, I agree - it looks like a W56 I just wasn't sure of the particular model

My biggest question: if this was in fact behind a 22R would it also bolt up to my 22RTE?

The bolt pattern on the bell housing looks identical to the W56 but the former 22R motor is throwing me off...

Anything that bolts up to a 22R will bolt up to a 22RE. I think but am not positive that the pilot bearing/should match up too.

If the truck originally had a 22RE it'll be a W56 with a top shifting RF1A. If it was originally a 22R, or it has the transmission that matches the 22R, then it'll be a G52 or G54 with a forward shift RF1A. Either will bolt up to your '87 turbo, but you might need to play games with your trans tunnel and center console depending on which transfer case you get.

Im pretty sure that is a W56 forward shift tranny from a later model 22re (around 1990). You can see where there are 2 shifters on the transmission and none on the tcase itself. To answer your question though, it should bolt up fine with either a 22re or 22r. You may have to get the clutch kit specific to this trans though as Marlin lists two different part numbers depending on the transmission.
