Can anyone repost pictures of the 4th gen skid plate installation?

What's up,
I just picked up my skid plate yesterday from the dealership and tried to install it today. Unfortunately I'm not having an easy time figuring out how to install the m8 rivnuts (I know I won't have problems with the rest of the installation though). I know that I am supposed to assemble the m8 bolt and m10 nut and screw it into the rivnut. Then when I place the contraption into the top hole i'm supposed to hold the m10 nut in place with a combination wrench while torquing the m8 bolt clockwise. Unfortunately when I do this I can still see the rivnut rim moving with the bolt so I know I'm not accomplishing anything. Is there a certain way I should be holding the m10 nut with the combination wrench? I've been looking at every thread on this board explaining the skid plate installation, but either they only show the skid plate installed already or the pictures don't work anymore haha.

Skid plate install

You are on the right track. I just installed mine last night. Insert the rivet contraption into the upper hole. Hold the M10 nut with a wrench while tightening the M8 until it is tight. Once the M8 can not longer be tightened unscrew the M8 all the way out and the M8 and M10 nut will be used for the other side repeating the process.

Make sense? I too had to think about it for a few minutes.:D

I've been trying for quite awhile and everything (the rivnut and the bolt) just keeps turning with the ratchet haha. Do you have to hold the rivnut steady or does it just eventually stop moving when you keep torquing the m8 bolt? I'm using a ratchet and not power tools by the way. What I did is assemble the rivnut contraption with the closed side of the combo wrench around the m10 nut so when I go to screw in the m8 bolt I can hold it in place using the combo wrench. But no matter what I do it (the rivnut) still turns. I'm thinking about giving in and just letting the dealership do it but my will (and not wanting to spend 100 dollars) keeps me at it haha.

Don't give up. Make sure you are using the m8 bolt with the washers (lock and regular). The combination should be the rivet, followed by the oversized nut, then the m8 bolt through the nut and into the rivet. With the combination in the hole, hold the nut steady while ratcheting the m8 until it gets tight. The contraption works just like a wall anchor you would use to hang a picture in a house. By tightening the m8 bolt you will be collapsing the rivet within the hole. Don't give up you are almost there.
 
I don't think there's any way to explain it over the internet and have it make sense. I had to scratch my head for about 20 minutes before I figured it out when I put mine on.

Yeah I haven't had time all week to work on it but tommorow I will install it if it takes me ALL DAY haha. I know that I'm doing it right but I just don't understand why the rivnut keeps turning. I don't know when it's supposed to "grip" to something and start "mushrooming"! Thanks for the advice though, and if anyone can figure how to explain it please post!

By "mushrooming" the directions mean that it flattens out as you tighten it. That's why there are slits in the sides of them. Just assemble those 3 parts in the order that the directions say, and hold the nut in place with a wrench, while tightening the end. The piece that's supposed to "mushroom" will compress until it locks itself inside of the frame. It's only purpose is to make the top hole compatible with a screw, like the bottom hole already is. You have to tighten it for a few minutes before it becomes secure. Then unscrew the bolt, and re-use it on the other side.

Well 4 hours in and I'm still at step one haha. I was thinking about what you guys were saying and I think I figured out what's wrong. Is the oversize m10 nut supposed to loose around the thread of the m8 bolt or is it supposed to be screwed on like how the rivnut screws onto the m8 bolt? I remember now that when I got my box it was open and the bolts and nuts were rolling all over the place! Maybe the m10 nut provided isn't the right one? If the m10 nut was threaded onto the m8 bolt I can see how it would push down on the rivnut to compress it as you screwed the m8 bolt in, but if it's loose it's not doing anything!

Well like I said before, reading directions over the internet is probably about as useful as the horrible directions that come with it. It took me about an hour, and I had never done any type of mods before that. So just keep trying, and you will figure it out.

If you still can't figure it out and want to drive an hour north to Orange County i'd put it on for you no problem.

Man I just moved back to San Diego from Orange county! I was training at Quest Diagnostics and was renting a room in Ladera Ranch in the Mission Viejo area. Anyways yeah I think I just give up too easily because I haven't found a position in which I can keep cranking that ratchet (while holding the combo wrench) without getting tired too quickly. Did you guys use power tools to install it? I think it'd really help quicken the process haha! It sucks working 6 days a week and not having any time to work on the 4R! I'm planning to order those toyota door sills though and hopefully those won't be as tough an installation as the skid plate!

Yeah the door sill enhancements just stick on with 3M adhesive, so if you can't figure that out, just get rid of your 4runner. Jk lol

I'm not as far inland as Missian Viejo, i'm on the coast in Huntington Beach. I was actually born in San Diego, so we switched places lol.

Well looks like I have to get rid of my 4runner... haha jk. Anyways this Saturday I MUST install it! But if I can't I'll be looking for you Josh haha. I think I'm gonna buy those door sills (my ticket for the chargers game on Sunday fell through) since I have money burning a hole in my pocket! Or do you think all weather floor mats would be a better investment? Anyways thanks for all the encouragement! I'm glad I got a 4runner over that beemer haha.

the door sill enhancements look sharp but the All Weather Mats would be much more functional for you. these guys have them pretty cheap:

Yeah I would have to agree. I only put the door sill enhancements on mine because I have an Obsessive Compulsive Modding condition and needed more things to put on my truck. The all weather mats are a great idea because Toyota doesn't know how to make dark carpet. Mine was filthy within the first month I had the truck.
 
Well first, you know that the Toyota one is strictly cosmetic right? The Downey ones seem to me functional skid plates for offroading, and would therefore be invisible to the average person, unless they bent down to specifically look for it.

I haven't actually called Downey yet.... but it looks like the skid plates are replacements for the "original" skid plates and not an additional skid plate like the aluminum plate from Toyota???

i do like the look of the aluminum plate but I'm not sure I shouldn't wait to put a solid plate on later. I'm pretty sure I also suffer from O.C.M. disorder as well :biggrin2:
