Can Outlets handle tailgating?

I tried to find an answer to this on here but couldn't so I apologize if it has already been answered.

I have a 2011 4Runner Trail Edition. I want to throw a tailgate party for a few hours before a football game. Can I run a 32in LCD TV and a Directv Receiver off of the 3-prong outlet in the back of the truck? I figured I would have to leave it running so the battery doesn't die. But can the outlet handle that amount of power or are there going to be some problems?

That is fine. I guess I will plug into the console. But the questions is can it handle a tv and receiver?

Look on the back of your TV and Receiver and there should be a sticker or plate with the wattage ratings printed there. If wattage is not published, it can be figured out using a formula with the other information published. I do not remember the formula, so either google or another member should chime in. 1engineer where are you?
 
The 400W outlet is in the center console, the back outlet is limited to 100W.

Maximum available capacity of the power outlet
n While the vehicle is being driven
The maximum capacity of the power outlet is always 120V AC/
100W.
n When the vehicle is stationary
The maximum capacity of the power outlet varies depending on
the position of the shift lever.
l The maximum capacity is 120V AC/100W when the shift lever is
in any position other than P or N.
l The maximum capacity is 120V AC/400W when the shift lever is
in P or N.
The maximum capacity of 400W can only be restored by turning
the power outlet main switch off and then on again with the shift
lever in P or N.

I don't see a reference here to front or rear, and both my outlets are labeled 100/400.

Where did you hear only the console one was 400 mike? I'm trying to figure that out now. damn you. lol

I discovered it when I plugged in my 18" laptop into the back plug, enjoying a movie and air conditioning while all laid out, I noticed that it wasn't getting enough juice to actually charge the battery. Moving the plug to the console outlet fixed it.

Having said all that, I have yet to use the back plug again for anything other than Christmas lights. It's entirely possible that I am totally and completely wrong.
 
For a pure resistive load, Power will equal voltage times current. When you get large inductive or capacitive loads involved, there are power factor penalties... but let's ignore that for now.

I think my 46" TV draws about 230W. Your direct tv box, depends... it can could be under 100W, but if it has a DVR in it, they tend to be power hogs.

So let's say you've got a 300W load, which would almost be 3A current draw... but that's on the AC side of the inverter. On the DC supply side, 300W on a 12V line would require 25A. That's assuming perfect efficiency of the inverter. I've seen some inverters that are only 50% efficient... That would mean you'd have a 50A draw off your battery.

I can tell you that my marine batteries which are designed for deep cycle, when new are good for about 125Ah (amp hours). So, you'd be lucky to get 2 1/2 hours out of a good marine battery... You 4Runner battery is not that good and won't deep cycle many times, they're made thin for high current draw for a very short time to start the engine.

If you want to tailgate, get a Honda 2000iu generator. Light weight, excellent power quality, quiet and for a couple bucks of gas will give you what you want.

Thanks bud, I could not say it better myself. That is because I could not say it at all! An understanding of electrical theory and application is a wonderful thing. I wish I had that understanding. Yes, I am jealous.

As I understand it the 400W is only available while the engine is on and the shift lever is in P or N which means the battery is being charged while in use so the drain on the battery should be minimal. The effects of the exhaust is a completely different issue.
