Can you disable auto-locks?

I have a 98 4runner sr5 v6 4x4. It has the automatic locking function in which all of the doors lock and unlock at the same time. Is there any way to turn this off? I would like to either turn the autolock function off or turn the entire electronic locking system off altogether. I would actually prefer manual locks. Is there any way to do this?

You could open your switch on the drivers door panel. I believe it is 3 screws to open it. Power flows through pins that lead into the switch, you could stop the connection to your lock and unlock switch (tape or anything) and I Belive that should kill all power locking.

But that's a little bit of "jerry rigging"

I think that would only disable that switch. Each switch sends a signal to the Body ECU which in turn sends signals to the lock actuators so key switches would still work. This makes it a very tough beast to kill without killing a whole lot of other stuff you want (like windows). You certainly could do it by cutting each wire to the actuators at the Body ECU, but it is a number of wires and I would not be confident telling you how to do it over the internet, as I have never tried it, plus OP has a '98 and I only have access to the 2002 wiring diagram.

I found this and it worked on my 99 SR5 4runner

I have a 2000 Tundra with the VIP RS3000 System. I followed the instructions on page 20 of the manual and it worked just fine! I even started the engine and the doors did not lock. Working just fine. If you can't find you manual, here is the procedure:
1) Sit in the driver's seat with the driver door open. 2) Insert the key in the ignition switch, and turn it to "ON" (not ACC) 5 times (ON-LOCK-ON-LOCK-ON-LOCK-ON-LOCK-ON) within a 10 second period. The STATUS MONITOR'S LED turns on, and the piezo "Chirper" sounds once.
YOU MUST PERFORM THE NEXT STEPS WITHIN 30 SECONDS!
3) Select the operating mode:

MODE
Auto lock/unlock ON
Programming step: Close the driver's door
Programming Completion:Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position (the chirper sounds once and exterior lights flash once)

Auto lock/unlock OFF
Programming step: Close the driver's door, then open, and close it one more time.
Programming Completion: Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position (the chirper sounds twice and exterior lights flash twice)

Hate to BTT an old thread, but hopefully this helps someone - the tip above worked on my 2002's RS3200 system as well. Mine was set to auto-lock, but now it's not.

I am so confused as to why someone would enjoy the hassle of having to individually lock and unlock each door at a time, I've owned vehicles like this before, most annoying thing ever.

This is exactly the feature I want to disable.

Even worse than annoying if it locks you out.

I've owned my '02 since 2001 so I know all of
it's little quirks and I've adapted. Plus I'm old school
so I put my keys in my pocket if they're not in the
ignition but now my son is soon to be driving it and
I'd like to have it lock intentionally rather than automatically.

Any advice?

Im going to say that this option is controlled by the factory alarm. You cannot simply remove the brains because you won't be able to start your truck. I have my truck set on VALET mode. But the doors still lock automatically whenever I start the truck. I developed a habit of always cracking my driver window down little bit before I close the door with the truck running. Just incase. But after putting the alarm into VALET mode. It has never locked itself automatically. Only when I put the key in and start the truck.

What about when it's not running? That's what I would like to change.

I can pull into my garage, take my keys out

It has not locked automatically for me ever since I put it into valet mode. Again, only when I put the key into ingnition and start the truck does it lock. And one of the reasons why I put it into valet mode is because I installed VIPER alarm. And rather then tracing all the factory alarm wires. Because god knows how it's wired. And because unplugging it does not allow the truck to start. VALET mode is the easiest way in my eyes.

Read through all that manual. And choose your best option. Try valet mode. You can always bring it back out of valet.

I saw on the Cruiser forum, that you can program the locking mode the way you want or disable it completely.
Following is what I have saved on my computer:
Again, this is from the 100 series LandCruiser:

"SETTING FUNCTIONS

Do all of this within 10 seconds of inserting the key. Make sure to hold for exactly 5 seconds.

You can set the following functions by yourself. To set the mode 1 (the automatic locking operation linked to shift lever position):
1. Set the parking brake, close all doors and turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
2. Shift the selector lever into the “P” position.
3. Press the driver’s side power door lock switch on the front side for about 5 seconds, within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.
4. The doors will be locked and unlocked to indicate that the function is set. To cancel the function, do the above operation again.

To set the mode 2 (the automatic locking operation linked to vehicle speed):
