Im thinking the same thing, Im pretty sure you will need a mild lift for 285's. I leaning towards 5100s in the front and daystar 1.5 in the rear. Im hoping to only lose 1-1.5mpg not sure what others are getting with lift and mild 285 ATs (duratracs take a bigger hit). I would rather get the 275's but the load c and the stiffer shocks might be too much on the ride.
This issue seems to come up about every 90 days or so. Search will reveal many threads. In sum, including mine as listed below, 285 will not be a problem or rub depending on the castor on the front wheels. When I first put mine on, no problem. But then I had the castor set closer to 4.0 for firmer steering purposes. I then experienced a slight rub, only in reverse and only if the tires were locked full left or right. I simple adjustment to the plastic inner wheel well liner at the very front, solved the problem No more rub. No problems. I think if you check "My Garage" you should see photos of the tires on the rig. Be safe

The C load and shocks will give you a great ride. Don't worry about that. I'm not sure if it's possible to get 285s in passenger tires (not LT). 275s actually fill out the wheel wells nicely at stock ride height.

I ran 285/70R17 Goodyear Silent Armors (P rated, not the LT ones) on my 2010 Silver TE for a year and a half. If you do the front fender liner mod you'll be fine with no lift. Mpg hit wasn't bad.
Per the OP's request, here's a link to my album with pics before I put my lift on. Note some of the pics were taken after I got my set of 285 Duratracs and they will rub the mudflap on the TE (before and after 3" front lift) since they're bigger diameter than the SA's in the 285 size. No rub after removing the mudflaps (I still need to cut away the offending plastic and put them back on)

Here you go - I remember this guy's truck because I decided to put 285's on my 4Runner based on his feedback. I had the 285 on my 4Runner for a while before I installed the lift but I never took pictures. There may be a few more examples buried in the 5th gen owner picture thread. Good luck.

Hey All, I just put BFG T/A KO 285/75/r16 on my 2002 4runner with no lift! I found a good deal on some tires and swooped on them. I am waiting on installing my lift until I get back from vacation. The tires are HUGE with very minor rubbing only on sharp turns. I am going to cut out some of the plastic interior wheel well to prevent rubbing and I should be fine. If anyone wants Pics message me and I might be able to snap a few before I install my lift.
