Can you look at tires and know you don't need an alignment?

I am about to replace my tires (46k miles on a 60k mile warranty) - the Geolanders did not wear like my original Dunlops. The tires have worn quite evenly across the tread. Every new tire dealer wants me to buy a 4 wheel alignement. If the tires wore evenly and did not pull at all while driving, what's the benefit of paying $75+? I don't mind spending the money if it is needed to make the new tires wear correctly, but this alignement thing seems like a pure profit ripoff.

Any thoughts out there?

Did you get an alignment when you bought the geolandars? If you did and you haven't been that hard on the vehicle then your alignment is probably fine. That being said, I like to at least have my alignment checked when I buy new tires. Vehicles right off the assembly line are rarely perfectly in spec.

As long as my tires keep looking good, I never worry about getting an alignment job.
