[Canada] Navigation map updates

Hi every fellow moose who lives in the great white North,

over the last month or two I've driven on some highways that have been built for over a year but aren't included in the maps of the in car software suite. I called Toyota today and the update will cost $275.... so expensive to the point the staff on the phone was *****ing about the silliness of it.

Has anyone found a way to update the maps without going to the dealer and without paying the through the roof price?

I do wish Canada gets entune soon. This system just isn't quite as well thought out as the Entune program.


*on a side note. Anyone had issues setting up messaging with their Iphone? I've RTFMed and still no dice. Music and phone call works but won't display or show text and email alerts.

Wish someone would upload a torrent of the most recent map file - just need to load it to a SD card and plug it in. I normally don't torrent anything, but after paying $50k for a truck, I don't feel the least bit bad torrenting a map update that would otherwise cost $300 all-in.

Maybe someone who buys a 2016 can copy the map file and upload it to Dropbox to share with a few fellow Canucks here

My iPhone 6 works fine - the text and iMessages pop up and are read when driving, and display on screen when stopped. But that's not the same as the systems "text message" display, which always shows no messages. I was told that Android works best, but like I said my iPhone does play messages just fine. I recall just syncing and it worked out of the gate.

I called the stealership about updating & almost fell off my chair when they told me the price. I do have concerns with the nav unit, it's taking a few attempts for certain menus to work, or "un grey" if you will. I'm hoping that once I bring the 4R in for my next service, It'll address these issues. Possibly leave with the latest updates, for free.

I would prefer to upload the updates myslef, for future reference. What a joke/scam. Feeling the pain...

I just had the same laughable estimate. I'll just use the maps on my phone. I see the update dvds are online for $170 US / $225 C. A member here, J.A., has a site with lots of great info.

If you're really set on it, you could buy an update disc, use it, then sell it here or on kijiji, ebay, etc.. Or you could just keep your eyes open for a used one coming up on those sites. I see ebay has some older ones for $40. Another idea would be to visit a local car stereo place. Those dudes know some tricks, but more than likely they'll try to sell you a Garmin.

for the iphone, there's a setting on your phone you need to change so that your 4runner will receive notifications.

On your iPhone go to "Settings", Select "BlueTooth". Select the information symbol next to "TOYOTA 4Runner". select the slider next to "Show Notifications" so that it is on.

Just an FYI - If you have entune the DVD's don't work...found this out the hard way after buying a DVD and it did nothing after I inserted it in the HU. I think the entune maps have to be updated through a usb flash drive.

Does the navigation get updated with the software? Tell them that you have something wrong with the Navigation and that you need an update. I got my software updated because of this. Not sure if the navigation is updated with this procedure though. I would post this on BC Toyota 4WD. There are some BC techs on the page, who'd know the answer.

The NAV software is completely separate from the head unit (apps) software or the firmware. NAV is purchased. The app software can be updated by the user via BT and a cell phone, and the firmware is updated by the dealer only.

The NAV software is a disc on 2003 - 2012, and is a micro SD card on 2013 - current.

Base map updates?

I have found the navigation system map useless of road. Unless I am on pavement or a marked county road, the nav system shows me in the middle of nowhere even though I am on a mapped forest service road. I'm forced to use my phone's GPS app. Any ideas/solutions?
