Found a trail edition for 35000 asking price 11000kms and want to import it up to canada anyone know how much id have to invest to make it road worthy. Still running the numbers to see how much id save i assume daytime running lights anything else I'm missing? Extra taxes at the border since it originally from japanAll help greatly appreciated.

does it have KDSS with Nav option ($2700),, not available in Canada.. if yes and you can get it for sub 33 g, it sounds good.. add 6.1% duty to compare
if it does not have it then compare to new at around $42 in Canada.. if you paid 33 plus duty = 35 grand used vs 42 new in Canada, without the KDSS and nav,.. not so great,
i'd get one with the KDSS nav option as its not available in Canada so it will hold somewhat of a premium..

Terminator is spot on. Don't forget that $42k new is before freight and fees (about $1,500) then taxes on all that (would be $43,500 x .13 in ON = $49,155), rather than the tax on $33k ($37,290 total, plus duty.)
Savings can really add up buying in US, sometimes as much as $10k, especially, as was said, that you buy one with options not avail here.
Importing is lots of paperwork, but not that bad. I've done it twice and will be doing it again. There's also a $225 RIV fee for importing and the joy of dealing with CBSA guards, which unlike the American border agents, aren't nearly as friendly or cooperative.
As for making it road worthy, you probably won't have do a thing if the US version has DRLs.

There is a 1500 rebate for cash deals in Canada...
The import process was easy, the hard part is finding the right vehicle and running the numbers to compare. Especially when the model/options are slightly different.

USED US vehicle assume $35 grand NO KDSS or NAV about $42 all in on the road in Canada
Assume a used Canadian Trail might be $45 (OTR), you only really save about $3 grand. That doubles if the US vehicle has KDSS and NAV. Also, the Canadian market will discount the value of a US import. It is BS, but they do. IMO, at this price level you need to save at least $5 grand to do it... OR best to get a Trail with KDSS and NAV..
Though I am not current on the market for the 4runner now, when I was searching for mine the Limiteds yielded almost double the savings that the Trail did.
Of course that is ballparking for reference..
Another consideration is that US Toyota dealers move off MSRP far more than Canadian dealers, that gets reflected in the used market pricing structure.

DRL is a programmable option so you might get it turned on free if you can find a sympathetic dealer. If the gas pedal recall hasn't been done yet you could take it in for that and ask them " Say, while I'm here, how about turning on the DRL cause I'm going to Canada?"

There's also some great financing options on 2012s right now while there's still some stock around. Terminator is correct, the spread on Limiteds is better, about 10k from what I'm seeing, but again, it can be hard to compare exactly as US models are differently equipped. And, at the end of the day, you are buying used (with who-knows what's really happened to it) as opposed to brand new.
The US does offer a a colour choice we can't get up here, ie, black with tan interior (the nicest, imho).
There is no shortage, however, of used 2012s for sale in the US, while up here there's usually only a handful in any particular province.

My mint used 6k mile US Limited w nav was $44 grand all in OTR into Canada,, new in Canada it was around $57-$58 OTR at MSRP, but mine has the rear slider not available on the Limited in Canada, only third row seating on Limited which I didn't want.
So, that is a $14 grand difference but slightly used vs new.. realistically it was about a $9-10 grand savings..
