Agree with the looks of the GCherokee. On the other hand, I can't imagine comparing a 4Runner to a Jeep. From a longevity and build-quality perspective.

Ever think that there is a reason WHY Jeeps are plentiful and 4Runners are hard to find?

We had a Cherokee and it was the worst 4x4 we've ever had==out of a dozen. Marginally better than my Subaru BRAT. Never used off-road, just on road. Repairs cost more than the payments did for the year we had it! We've had 2 RAV4, 1 Scout, 2 4WD Toyota p/u, two Pathfinders, 1 Frontier, 1 Xterra, 1 Jeep, Subaru Brat, 1 Ramcharger, and 2 FJ40s. In over 20 years as a Wildlife Biologist for the FEDs, I've driven another dozen different rigs=all American made.For what it is worth, our 2019 SR5 Premium is the best rig we've had except MAYBE my 1985 SR5 pick-up.


Seek and you shall find!

Every dealer I've talked with -- 17 at this point -- don't even know when or if they'll get any more into their inventory. Base models are relatively easy to come by, but not the trims needed for the family.

I don't have time on my side. I need a new car in the next few weeks.

It's looking grim.

Today, just down the road, I can get a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Right now. With far more factory pricing incentives, and a dealer who will negotiate the base price to begin with.

It's an extraordinarily beautifully made SUV and I'm sure it's more than capable offroad. But it's not my long-beloved 4Runner...

Most already replied. I love LTD due to TORSEN and for about $2k can add a better suspension than PRO. MANY of these available slightly pre-owned. If you want a dedicated color / TRIM (like that rad green TRD Pro) than you are not that desperate (needs vs wants). The jeep will DROP in major value FAST and is a POS. Would rather buy a 4th gen (MANY on FB marketplace for $9k-$15k with approx. 150k miles) over a jeep. Clean it up, drive until the supply block is eased, and sell it when they get the one you want in.

I bought a ‘22 TRD Off-Road Premium on Thursday night. I called many Phoenix area dealers for a week prior and got stories that ranged from 5k over MSRP to “we don’t have any in stock and we’re taking reservations and you’re #37”.

I ended up buying from Earnhardt Toyota in Mesa for MSRP. On Thursday, they had twelve in stock, including TRD Off-Roads and Trail editions in Army Green. Avondale Toyota called me yesterday to ask me to come in because they had received a shipment and they were not selling over MSRP. Avondale salesman told me that he gets out-of-state buyers all the time, including many from California.

Give those dealerships a call and see what they can do for you.

JGC looks nice and is magnitudes above a 4runner in terms of road comfort, but I've seen so many people with problems after a few years I wouldn't touch one. I'd put them in the same category as range rovers where it's great if you are only keeping it until the warranty wears out and then trading it in.

As far as more than capable off-road.....if off road is a dirt road leading to a camp site sure, Anything rowdier than that and I wouldn't push it. I'd probably trust a Subaru before a JGC for offroading. New outbacks are pretty damn nice to be honest.

I agree. I had a 2019 GX (traded for a 4 runner) and it's just as nice as a Limited. Of course, it gets absolutely horrendous gas mileage 12-13 mpg which is worse than the 4 runner (not much), but you will likely be able to find one out there. In fact, my local Toyota dealer had a 2020 ORP on the lot (used) listed at $58,000. Right next to it was a 2020 GX Premium (used) for $50,000. Both had roughly 20K miles. For whatever reason, people have lost their minds about getting their hands on a 4 Runner.

There are MSRP dealers out there

Check Peppers Toyota in Paris Tennessee. I got my Lime Rush there two weeks ago. Flew from Colorado - they picked us up in Nashville and we drove home.
Worth checking out, and they do MSRP. This thread has tons of info on MSRP dealerships and those that are gouging.

We've had two newer GCs over the years. One got totaled and we replaced it with another. We enjoyed them quite a bit, but outgrew it when we had our second kid. They are surprisingly small inside, but the new GC L would solve that. They were great to drive. Very comfortable and even the V6 was reasonably quick. It towed better than my 4R does. Interiors and the big screen Uconnect are great. We haven't had any issues aside from recalls on the FCA vehicles we've had over the years. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new L, especially with the hoops to jump through and current pricing on a 4Runner. There is zero chance I'd overpay for a vehicle "just because" it's the market. F that.

-Germain Toyota has four 2022s, two black and two blue
-Coughlin Toyota has one 2022 in blue
-Tansky Toyota has three en route, blue, silver, and black

So in a 25-mile radius we have at least 18 Limiteds, and I didn't check all the ones in that radius.

None of these is listed at over $52k.

FWIW, the current GC has been almost the same vehicle since 2011 with a few design tweaks since and now an added 3rd row with the L. I'd call it redesigned maybe, but calling it a first year remake when its essentially been the same evolving powertrain, technology, etc. since 2011 isn't really fair. FCA has their fair share of issues, but it's way more car for your $50k than the 4R is, if you're into that.

I agree with the statement about the Las Vegas dealers. I Live in SoCal and could not find a 4R. I search and found 2 in Las Vegas. By the time I went back and forth with the two dealerships and sale people and they gave me the VIN. I realized it was the same 4R. The two Toyota dealerships are owned by the same company. So I put the two sales men to the test and got my deal. My credit union agreed to finance but in order to drive it home from Vegas I had to take the Toyota financing, drive the truck home to SoCal, get it smoged, pay the Tax and Registration then my credit union just paid off the Toyota loan.
Note: I paid the Tax and registration out of pocket, my credit union took that as a down payment.( why pay interest on taxes?)

The dealership gave me a temporary paper plate to drive it home and take care of the DMV stuff. Prior to all this I called around to four different states looking for a truck. I actually went to Mark Miller Toyota in SLC while on a business trip. They only had one in Red. Nice bunch of guys here.

I just purchased my 2010 4Runner on Driveway.com. they will ship it out to your home from anywhere as long as you pay for shipping. My truck was 90 miles away so I decided to pick it up myself. In facts I test drove the car weeks prior but didn't buy because the dealer wouldn't get to the price I wanted it for so I walked out. Couple of days later I found the website and saw it was the same Vin number I test drove. I baught the car from them minus all the BS dealer fees and since I picked up the car I didn't pay shipping either. I paid what I wanted to initially when I was dealing with the dealer. Check it out they have way newer 4runner then mine.

Toyota announced they will be producing over 800,000 cars in January 2022, which is a record total. Reportedly hundreds of thousands of nearly completed cars waiting for chips to install. When that inventory gets dumped onto the market, things will start correcting back to normal.

I haven't seen that announcement. If it's legit, that's helpful to know. May be too late, but I'll hold out as long as I can.
