Capped Lugs??

Sorry, I really do search for this stuff. site: t4r.org and elsewhere.
Just want to verify. Does a 2021 have the dreaded capped lug nuts/bolts or not?

They sure looked capped but maybe I'm just paranoid.
Got screwed with capped lugs before.

Wanna change them out now so I don't need to worry about my lug nuts.

Neither did I… and not just for 5th gen 4runner but for any Toyota.

I am guessing OP had a Ford Truck before… and I have heard that Ford managed to create an issue with capped lug nuts…

Jeep Wranglers also have the capped lugs. Many personal nightmare experiences with them on two different ones. I ended up buying a full new non-capped sets but should have done it the minute I took ownership.

No surprise there… And I am sure for many Jeep “nuts” issue with lug nuts is just another “it is a jeep thing… you wouldn’t understand”… :

Own 2 F150 Ecoboosts
My issues with the cap lugged nuts is its neither a 21mm or 22mm socket! So chances are if you go to Discount or a tire shop for a flat/patch/plug they just ruin them over time.
Protip: Just swap them out for Dorman replacements.
Also, 4Runner lug nuts aren't as long and I haven't run in to the problems I associate with my Ford lugs nuts with

Sez should not lube the studs. Antisieze is a lubricant so I guess we be doin’ it wrong...

“My feeling is the benefit of using anti seize on lug nut studs outweigh any concerns of problems it may cause. I do think it is a good idea to apply the anti seize very sparingly to the lug studs, and to try to not get any anti seize on the contact point between the end of the lug & where it seats in the rim lug recesses.”

I checked the lugs nuts on my 2018 4Runner SR5 Premium and they are NOT capped, although the mold marks make them look like they may be. I had a Dodge Caravan once with capped lug nuts; what a pain! When the cap came loose, the lug wrench wouldn't fit so you couldn't change a tire in case of a flat.

I feel the same way about anti-seize but if we're to be anal about torque, the torque value should be lowered, since the studs are now lubricated.

How much lower??? Depends on the "K" factor of the A-S.

You’re right. This has been analyzed a lot and it’s not always a straight forward formula. Depends on several factors including thread size, material, lube, length of bolt, etc. Somewhere in one of the forums there’s a long thread on the subject of 4R lug nuts.
Lubed threads without lower torque values will stretch threads or break bolts. In an aerospace application I saw this happen with lubed titanium bolts. The overtorqued bolt broke and sounded like gunshot in a quiet lab. Shorts were laundered afterward.
