Car accident...

Well the 4Runner has seen better days...

I stop at a red light like I normally do, windows down (it's a nice day out in Arizona, not 110F like normal) and just reached for a drink from my large sprite from in-n-out burger. Just as my lips reach the straw I feel some serious pain in my neck and back, everything is moved, and I realized I'm half-way through the intersection and still moving. I slam on the brakes (again, wasn't I already stopped?) and stop in the middle and wonder what just happened. Apparently the lady behind me in the Saturn who was going around 50 - 60 mph didn't agree with the idea of the red light and decided to keep going. Unlucky for me, I was directly in the way. She never even touched her brakes. I backed up my truck a good 6 - 10 feet (which still still in the intersection, even after that) to try and get out of the way as much as possible, and got out to make sure the other people in the Saturn are alright. The lady is alive (luckily) though she doesn't look too well. The cops soon show up and the rest of the accident BS goes on. They decide that I should be taken to the hospital, as I've got some back and neck pain and would like to get checked out. They stuff me in an ambulance and away I go.

When I went to look at the truck later I got to investigate closer at the damage.

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure they're going to total it out.

The frame is bent pretty severly in many places, and the entire body is tweaked. The spare tire is lodged into the rear axle, and the floor of my loadspace area has buckled in. The roof of the truck has small buckles in it, and the entire rear axle has shifted - the rear suspension will not go up or down at all. The only door that actually works is the driver's door, the others require some grunt to open or close. I was holding my soda at the time, and the entire inside of the truck is covered (literally everywhere). I found the top of the cup and the straw sitting neatly in the back right door pocket. The rear window and hatch area is covered in soda as well. The driver's seat is also in less-than good condition as well, I bent it back and sideways when I went flying back into it.

Here are the pictures so you can see, I'm not sure what's going to happen but hopefully I'll be able to get another 4Runner (probably from the dealer) and try it all again. You better believe I'll be taking off my black wheels, custom HID lights, safari bar and black magics to put on the new truck.

As far as my personal injuries, I've got some back and neck pain (typical) but nothing is seriously damaged. I'll be hurtin for a couple weeks, but I'll be alright. They might be able to bend the frame back into place, but there's no telling what the strength will be like after they're done. They also have to take the body off the frame to pull it back out, which means they'll have to put it all back together. There's no telling how well it will all go back together, and I have a feeling Toyota's nice fit and finish will be out the window entirely.

Damn, that sucks man. Glad you're ok though, trucks can be replaced, you can't!

That's a nice looking 4Runner. Was it lifted?

It was not. Though I was going to go to the off-road shop today after class (which is where I was headed when the accident happened) and order it.

I'm glad I got out of it alright too. The doc said that being 18 years old helps, usually the young-ins bounce back pretty quick from these things.

That really sucks. Glad to hear you're ok though. I don't want to think what the Saturn looked like if your 4Runner took that kind of damage.

Make sure you keep an eye on your injuries though - often whiplash effects take a few days to show themselves.

Wow!!! that must of been a heavy duty hit. I was recently rear ended myself but not at that speed mine was a Volkswagon. Glad you're okay. Like someone mentioned be on the lookout for your injuries, you never know what can develop.

My thoughts exactly. I'm gonna go to the doctor again in a week or so and get another follow-up, just to make sure nothing else happened.

I thought of the 05 too, but I'd really miss that silver bumper trim and such... Would have to get that painted ASAP :p

On the bright side I could probably get a hell of a deal on an 04...

ouch...wow...yikes...that was my reaction to the pics/story...

Wow, that could have been soo worse, take it easy and be VERY tuned to what your body is trying to say over the next week or so. That buckle in the back sure does show the effects of the momentum she had...

Glad you're ok, though...

Kevin

I reckon its a write off btw - if the doors wont open and the roofline is distorted that's usually a pretty sure sign.

Look on the bright side - its probably cured the driver's seat clicking if you had that problem!

I am terribly sorry to hear what happened to you. I am glad you are ok and didn't really have serious injuries. Those pictures are rough to look out. It is obvious she was going at a speed if her little Saturn did that to your 4Runner. You are also lucky there was no traffic coming when she pushed you into the intersection. I am 18 too, and don't let that bad experience give you a bad taste of driving. It was definitely 100% her fault and there was nothing you could do in that case to stop it.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Could have caught one in the driver's door if there was traffic going the other way. I think the left turn arrow was going at the time, and there was light traffic which saved me there.

This won't put a poor taste in my mouth, driving is my life. I really just want my 4Runner back. I was going to put my new stereo in tomorrow, but I guess that will have to wait... :(

That's exactly what I was thinking. If the frame/body are that tweaked, there's no way that will ever be the same again.

On a sidenote, I'm pretty sure I had the only 4th gen ever not to have the seat problem. My new one will probably do it, that would be just my luck. DAMN!

hey sorry about the truck and the pain, but im glad your okay - afterall thats all that matters... now aren't you glad you were in a bug old suv instead on a plastic saturn? i know i would be if i was in the same situation...

the truck even though pretty beat up looks like it handled it self well and kept you alive...

hey if you get a new 05, you should get the red color- i always loved the 3rd gen sport in red and from what i hear the sport still has the silver accents

take care

Wow! Sorry to hear about your accident. It's never easy when an accident happens and like everybody else has said, you're okay, and that's the only thing that's important.

I hope everything works out well for you and take care!

I forgot about the 05 having the red - I've always liked that color. It would be a very hard choice for me, I love the galactic grey but there's something about that red that gets me too.

Your OK. Stuff can be replaced.

Life is paramount.

Glad that you are ok.

I've been in a crash myself, and when you survive and are unharmed you do look at the material losses, but the fact that you didn't get hurt should remain at the forefront of your thoughts.

Last year when i was 17 I was in the Saturn, and the old lady had a suburban that was lifted atleast 6 inches (yay for american soccer mom-red neck hybrids). the car hit me at around 40 as i was stopped at a light around a blind corner and the front bumper of her car basically dropped the back of my saturn and the roof all into the back seat area. I was unconcious for a day and a half, as the impact slammed me through the intersection, and down a 15 foot hill into a drainage creek on the other side. Apparentlyshe wasn't used to be driving this car, it was new. apparently she totaled her grand cherokee about 3 weeks earlier and was driving her husbands car. (as a joke for my last birthday a friend got me a bumper sticker that said "women can vote, do they have to drive too?" although i opted not to put that on my runner.")

[EDIT] btw i never saw the car they cut me out of so i dont know the extent of the damage, but im sure it was worse then yours ;)

once again, glad your OK, and may your 4runner be restored, replaced, refurbished and back in your control soon.

Glad to hear you didn't sustain any serious injuries. Too bad about your 4Runner, but I must say it doesn't look as crunched as I expected after hearing that someone rammed you at 50-60. That's a huge hit. The Saturn must have been a wad of steaming crap after that.

 damn, I loved your 4Runner too, its hard to believe you were just posting pics of the emblems and now this. Just be glad you're okay and still walking around. Last October I was sitting at a red light just like you with my 02 Explorer, and I was on my cell phone, and I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a truck speeding towards me and I KNEW it was going to hit, so I told my g/f on the phone "F(@*#, I'm about to be hit" and sure enough, he nailed me and there was nothing I could do. The damage wasn't nearly as bad ($3800 worth) but I had a lot of back pains for weeks after that. I probably should have been checked out, but I just didn't have the time. :( Now every time I come to a stop at a red light, I'm slightly paranoid that I'm going to be hit again.

Glad to hear you are ok. Like everybody else said, the truck can be replace but you can't. Glad to see that the tires, wheels and all the other stuff can be salvaged. Hope your injuries heal soon! Post pics of your new ride when you get it.
