If you search "Ceiling cargo" you should come up with the thread you're talking about. I just recently went with the D-rings that I ordered from Nissan- they are the X-terra cargo system anchors, and the stud fits right into the threads once you remove the coat hook. Combined with the Blue Ridge Overland Gear attic, it works great for the blankets and jackets that usually litter my backseat. Not HD enough for everyone but already gotten a couple compliments on it. I'll see if I can figure out how to post a photo or two of it tonight.

I did this, because I'm tired of that being under my back seat, and it's way more accessible on those back country camping trips when it's just inside the rear glass and not under a pile of shit.
Not going to argue the legality of it, I don't really care, but if anyone else is looking for a way to mount theirs...
This is a disposable shotgun (NEF Pardner Protector, bought it for $100 used, clone of the 870) in a Big Sky Racks SBR-1 ($57.00 at Cabelas). Big Sky also makes an SBR-2 which holds two guns. I actually bought the SBR-2 because they were out of the SBR-1, but I simply didn't add the extra clamps on the back side for the second gun so this is basically the SBR-1.
The rack is very stout, nicely finished aluminum. If you look at the link, you will see that there is a padded middle section with a velcro band that is designed to secure the gun, I opted not to install that in the interests of keeping this nice and trim to the headliner. I have a fastex buckle holding the gun in and will use a short length of braided wire / cable lock to secure the gun against theft as needed. You could also build a aluminum lock assembly using aluminum plate and a clevis pin (see old pic, below).
By placing it here I was able to maximize two features: first, no drilling required. Just remove the coat hooks and bolt this up in their place. Second, it's accessible without opening the hatch if you roll the window down.
A few pics including from outside to give you an idea how invisible this thing is. I had one in my Xterra and no one ever noticed it, and it survived some harsh use in Moab and the like.

I ended up flipping the shotgun 180 deg on its axis, so the sights face the front of the truck and the loading gate faces the back. The gun is more secure and tighter to the rack that way. It's working out great, even on off road stuff.

Not really. Once mounted the rack doesn't move so there's no wear. The muzzle of my shotgun is wearing a black mark into the edge of the headliner, but that's because it is a snug fit and rubs. I really don't care- it's there for a purpose.
The current orientation of the gun is flipped 180 on it's axis from the original way I had it hanging. See below pics.

that is an extremely convenient way to carry a shotgun or other long gun. thanks for posting the part numbers. Out of curiosity what purpose do you use this for? Personal protection or are you law enforcement or similar? It will be for personal protection here while in the bush. Love this mod.
Also, could always velcro a piece of leather or cloth on the headliner by the barrel before it wears a hole in your headliner.

Just to clarify, the part number above is for the D rings only. The rack itself is Big Sky Racks model SBR-1 (SBR « Big Sky Racks)
It serves a few purposes - personal protection while camping in bear country, for one; but it's in there all the time because I like to have a long gun accessible to me to augment my ever-present sidearm in case shit goes really sideways.
I am law enforcement but that's not the reason I installed it. Being law enforcement does give me an advantage (for lack of a better word) when it comes to being able to leave it loaded - federal law pertaining to off duty carry of firearms - LEOSA (NRA Law Enforcement Division|Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act)- allows for it. I would suggest leaving it unloaded if you don't have the LEOSA exemption and obviously knowing your state laws as they pertain to long guns in a motor vehicle.

I removed the cable lock and installed a better lock made from aluminum flat stock, 1/4" bolts and nuts, a 1/2" clevis, and a padlock. Clevis goes in from the bottom and drops out when the padlock is unlocked. This is substantially similar to my old Xterra lock which is pictured in the post that the OP pulled from another thread, above.
I didn't pad the aluminum because the gun is a beater and I don't care if it gets beat up, but for a nice gun the aluminum needs to be covered for scratch protection.
