Cargo Shelf Ideas

Hey Guys,

I'm looking into a shelf or similar for the rear cargo area. I have a 2014 SR5 WITHOUT 3rd row seating. I also don't have the sliding tray that the trail comes with. Ideally, I just need something to cover the cargo area from potential thieves. I saw that Toyota offers a retractable cargo cover, but it doesn't look like it offers enough coverage.

I've searched on this forum and on Google for shelf ideas or similar, but didn't really find something I like. Seems like most people are building drawer setups, which is not what I'm going for at this time. Goal is to cover cargo area, light and portable if possible - I want to be able to easily remove it from the vehicle if I need to transport larger items. Thanks in advance!

I keep a lot of stuff in my truck (EDC back, Pelican case with towing stuff, Pelican case with first aid kits, misc shtuff) and I use the retractable cover every day.

I operate on the premise that if they can't see it they won't be tempted and the Toyota retractable cover does just that and it's simple to remove if need be

Doesn't help if you're storing items taller than the cover though (IE ARB frig)

Thought about that too, but I figured if I had a bunch of random shaped objects in the back and a black sheet over it, it would be obvious that something is hiding underneath.

That helps, I don't plan on storing items taller than the cover all the time, but I can always remove the cover if need be. I saw some pictures on this forum showing the gap between the back seats and the gap between the rear hatch. I'm more concerned with the gap closer to the rear hatch. If I were to use Toyota's cargo net and the cover, will someone be able to set the items stored in the cargo net? Hope that made sense.

Had that on my previous car and it was a pain to see out at night and parking in areas that have little to no street lights.

small tarp, a couple of fiberglass tent poles (buy a repair kit) electrical twist on wire connector nuts.

place the nuts on the ends of the tent poles. then insert them into grommets in the tarp. The wire nut stops the pole from sliding through the grommet. make an "X" with the poles.

set this on top of your cargo area.

the whole thing disassembles into a very small space..

you may have to trim the tarp and add grommets. you can also trim the tent poles with a dremel and cut-off wheel.

I did this for my FJ, and have thought about it for my 4Runner. (sold the FJ to get the T4R)

This. If you use a black cover, you can't see the shapes under it because of the factory tint. I use an old 4X6 dark green poly tarp.

Even during the day you can't see much and at night you can't make out anything with just the factory tint if you use a black sheet.

I liked the cargo cover but the fridge didn't fit under it so I hemmed a black sheet. The cargo cover has good coverage except right against the seats. As long as you don't have anything brightly colored right there it will work fine. If you are worried about that gap you can just lean the seats back and there isn't a gap.

Works fine ! Bought one off a member here when I 1st got mine, keep my bug out bag , cpl rubbermaids with stuff , last but not least golf clubs which are my babies ($$) ! That said have limo tint on those rear windows & with way rear seats are you can't see shit !

There is a slight gap but I can't seem to see anything back there.

I use a large black wool blanket over a big bag of emergency supplies and tools I keep in the back of mine. Doubles as a survival item if stranded or a blanket to use when outdoors etc.

made my own cargo cover. Had some left over material so that's what I used. Bought 2 spring loaded curtain rods ($5ea) so I can easily remove. Not the nicest setup, but it was cheap and it does the job.
