Cat or no Cat? that is the question

Hey,
i was wondering what everyone thought about removing the cat. I already have a flowmaster but thinking about removing my cat for more sound. I have a o2 sensor simulator so i wont throw a code. Would you do it?

Nope. I'm not an environment freak, but I don't go out of my way to help destroy it for something as trivial as "more sound".

Correct me if I am wrong but don't you need some back pressure on most newer cars/trucks.

Why not get a high flow cat?.

and removing the cat will not make the truck that much louder still has the muffler on it.

I was told Highflow cats are very simular to the stock 4runner cat, but i am worried about losing back preasure.

In almost all states (if not all), removal of a cat is illegal (and punishable by hefty fines). If the vehicle was originally equipped with a cat (which all 4runners were/are), you cannot simply remove the cat and run the vehicle on the streets.

You can replace the cat with dual cats (for true dual exhaust for 6 or 8 cyl) or replace it with a high-flow cat. As mentioned in previous posts, the loss of back pressure on the system may cause the control system trouble trying to compensate.

My 4-Runner is currently operating with a hollowed-out catalytic converter, it is not by choice and I am not proud of it.

Sound-wise, the absence of the cat adds a "popping" quality to the sound of the 1990 3.0 V6. It does not have the thumping of a V-8 nor does it have the "scream" of a high-revving 4 cylinder...generally one would say that it adds a snowmobile-like quality to the sound, directly at the pipe. For those not familiar with the sound of a snowmobile, a close reference would be any large 2-stroke engine.

So I'd say its not worth it, things sound smoother with the cat.
