Catback Exhausts Recommendations

Has anyone upgraded their exhaust...and if so, what exhaust did you go with? Will you feel an increase of power / improved gas mileage?

Thanks!

I am interested in information from guys running aftermarket exhausts as well.

And yes....I have used the search option.

I have the Borla catback and the TRD cold air intake. Love the sound, gives it more pep/accelerator responce but as far as noticable HP gains, probably not. Sounds awesome though which = lower gas milage from always stomping on the accelerator.

Maybe I am wrong, but it has always seemed to me that if Toyota could increase HP, torque and mpg just by changing the intake and exhaust slightly (very little extra $$$ for them), then they would have already done it.

I would like to see dyno numbers on these aftermarket pieces.

I will look into the Borla catback. I had a K&N CAI on my Tundra and really liked the sound as well. It's pretty funny though as you mentioned...any MPG gains were definitely offset by mashing on the pedal to hear the sweet sound it made!

I will most likely go with a CAI on the runner just need to decide between TRD or K&N....

They probably don't do that because they need to keep pricepoint at a certain level. If they coin out more, then we have to coin out more. That's why there are aftermarket parts :D plus you get to do exactly what you want instead of relying on the factory, cause not everyone is always going to be please from the factory.

As far as exhaust, I went with the magnaflow 12586 just like mutau has linked. I bought and had installed from ~$140. Somewhere in that range, but I did take it to a back woods exhaust shop that I know.

With the intake, you might also want to look into the aFe also. I was extremely happy with the sound, and looks of this. The install was a breeze also and went together exactly as stated with no variations. plus I got mine cheap. aFe Intake System - Stage 2 - 1XRACING - AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES PERFORMANCE PARTS WHOLESALE Shipping took a while but I called and talked to them about it and because I bought it wholesale they say it came directly from the manufacturer.

If you do it for sound, thats great. If you do it expecting increased performance/efficiency, you will be disappointed. Of course Toyota or GM or Ford or Nissan or anyone else would put on the CAI and different exhaust if - a big IF - they could see any gains in efficiency whatsoever while still meeting all emissions requirements. They don't because those components don't help efficiency, just sound different is all. Those guys spend BILLIONS a year in R&D to eke out less than 1-2% improved performance and efficiency.

I'm sure you've posted but give us a three sentence review on that magnaflow.

I'm partial to it, but probably wouldn't change it. I love the tone it has. Its got a nice tone, but the motor drowns it out after the rpm's get on up there and then the intake takes over. I do wish it was a tad louder, but that's because where I come from, I'm use to big nasty V8's and muscle so that's the tone I like. I've thought about changing to the pipe that's a tad shorter but I've gotten attached to it. I may end up changing to a full catback from borla down the road so I can get the stainless pipes, but that will happen after I get the DT shorty headers and the URD supercharger...meaning its going to be on for a while, since college is my funds drainer right now.

Everyone here is forgetting three big reasons why manufacturers don't put open exhausts or intakes on the vehicles stock. Noise, vibration and harshness.

The large majority of customers want a quiet vehicle, period. Another big reason is often low end is lost for sake of more high end power. Again most people want off idle performance and don't often wring out their vehicles so they would never appreciate the gains to be had anyway.

I've got the aFe intake on my truck and love it. I've had it on for about 500 miles and it's probably one of the best things I've done to my truck. I love the sound of it.

I'm also planning on replacing the stock muffler with the magnaflow muffler in a couple weeks.

I have a 12586 Magnaflow muffler and TRD Intake. Follow the Youtube links in my sig for a little video and sound of them.

Sounds really good.

Hey, what bike is that in your videos? It looks an awful lot like my Specialized fXC. You have a better set of forks than I do though.

This is certainly true of motorcycles. Even with stage 2 & 3 modifications I noticed a decrease in power unless there was sufficient back pressure. Performance is not affected too much at the top end but then again who drives at top end all of the time. But I know that some folks like a bit of a "growl" even in their SUV's. But why would you want your exhaust competing with your JBL system?

What gains?

Borla Muffler Dimensions? - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

Frankly, the Borla is a bit loud for long trips, especially driving up mountains. My last car was a Mustang GT and the sound of it stock was 100x better than the 4runner's V6 with borla. I recently rented an F150 supercrew that had the ecoboost twin turbo V6. I was pleasantly surprised, it is a nice powerful motor with lots of torque even in that big truck. The 4runner has enough power for most driving barely, (maybe, ok so no I want more power), but anyway I would prefer it have an engine like the ecoboost. The 5th gen is a very large vehicle, about the same size as an expedition, and it would be better served with a great, (read powerful) motor like the ecoboost.
