Catyletic converters Stolen....Thanks METH..

a nice surprise when i cam into the shop yesterday. I went to move my 3rd gen to the back of the building, but when it fired up, it sounded like a monster truck.

i looked under the truck (already knowing what it was) and sure enought, it was missing the cat... so i check my tundra right next to it...sure enough, cats are gone.

So someone get 2-3 hits of meth (the cheap, suck in your face, rot your teeth, pick your skin kind) and i get to replace nearly $1300 in parts. :bravo:

I almost didnt even have to look to see you were in Ohio.. Its hit northern OH for a while too. Im lucky no one I know has been a victim.
 
Few years back fed x in col Ohio had like 60 cats stolen off delivery vans in one night,time to buy more guns
 
To make it a little worse, for some reason they took it back far enough to get the rear O2 sensor also, and being the despicable thieves they are, they CUT the wire on the vehicle side... They could have unplugged it, but why would they.

i may just go with a magnaflow cat, since they cut behind the rear flange, i don't have the option to just bolt a replacement in anyway.
 
the Karma they get is being meth heads, so as rotten as this is for you they are living horrible miserable lives full of suffering every waking moment. Doesn't solve your problem but may ease the anger when you think about how pathetic these window lickers are and how great your life is comparatively.
 
Bummer dude. Seems like neither of us are having very good luck with the runners. We've had quite a few stolen from our fleet of Fords at work. Most places around here wont take them unless you have prrof you owned it and/or the vehicle it belonged to.

Im always down for a nighttime methhead hunt....

Around here, the only restriction is 1 per day per person. so they got 3 from me, that makes 3 days worth of work in one night...

i sent you a couple links to transfer cases for your truck, i hope you get one and get that thing ready for some wheeling before winter come back.

...but my question is: Who is it that's buying these obviously cut/stolen catalytic converters? That's where the cops ought to be concentrating their efforts.

People buying stuff they know to be stolen are, IMO, just as much a part of the problem as people stealing them.

They ought to be like pawn shops and be required to record information on anyone trying to pawn an easily stolen item like a gun.

Ought to be the same with catalytic converters. Want to sell that catalytic converter to the metal recycler? OK, show us a valid photo ID with a current address and we'll record it in our book. Also when you come in, just to be safe, we'll go ahead and have the cops run your name for wants and warrants.

No ID? Hit the road, dirtbag.

People will stop stealing cats as soon as they realize they can't sell them for meth/crack money. :shrug:

they do take the information from the people selling them ( i called one of the 4 local recyclers) they have to provide ID and give a make and model of the vehicle the cats came off of. problem is, the recyclers do not know if they are being honest about the make and model. im sure they sold mine as a chevy truck cat all three days.

the only solution is for these yards to quit buying the cats, but that wont happen.

They are, and they do. When I scrapped my last truck, I had to hunt all over town for a recycler that would even take my cat, most of them assume a loose cat is stolen and want nothing to do with it. The place that did pay me for it also photocopied my ID. But if you're in the business of stealing cats, you probably have a friend or partner at a crooked recycling joint willing to help you fudge the records, just like thieves have a fence at a crooked pawn shop to help them get rid of stolen TVs and tools.

No checking for records/warrants though, that's an violation of rights and an invasion of privacy and we don't want to go down that road any farther than we already are.
 
usually to make your vehicle less desirable is to add a full skid plate setup underneath.

one that even covers the gas tank to reduce them from putting a hole and draining the tank.

How is it a violation of rights? Is there a catalytic converter recycling/meth junkie amendment to the Constitution that I missed somewhere?

I'm no constitutional authority, but I'm reasonably certain that running your name for warrants constitutes a search under the 4th, and I don't think trying to sell a cat counts as probable cause. A person having warrants is public information. There is no right to privacy there. That's why cities put out their "most wanted" lists. As a LEO, I check people all the time, esp if I know they're a regularly wanted person. Checking them isn't a search and I don't need PC to check someone for warrants.

I'll add this... I was assigned to my dept's fugitive unit for the last 4 years. Warrants is literally ALL I did.

If you want to hear a lawyer's opinion, I posted it up above. ;):

Hearno is right. Running wants and warrants is not a "search" within the meaning of the 4th amendment.

Neither is asking someone for an ID when they are selling a scrap CC.

This ^^^^^ Warrants are public information with no right to privacy about them. You can literally call in and ask about them. I can run a license plate while driving, see who it's registered to, and run them for warrants if I want before even making a traffic stop. In fact if I can match the driver license picture from the warrant to the driver I can use that as my PC to stop them. Just my $0.02
