CB Antenna and Mounts

Hi All

I’m considering about getting a CB and I’d like to get your opinion on a good brand and mount. My biggest concern is the mount. I do take my 4Runner to a car was about twice a month. So I would like to find a mount//antennas that’s car wash friendly or with a removable antenna. Any recommendations?

Thanks

I use a Wilson 5000 magnetic, easily removable fit a car wash. I place it between the shark fin and the roof rack rail on the passenger side so the antenna pattern is oriented slightly to the driver side into oncoming traffic.

I just ordered a Stryker SR447 HPC2 radio which should be here Monday. (I love how tiny this unit is) I installed an Alpha Foxtrot dash kit that the radio will mount to. I was originally going to use a Rago antenna mount on the rear hatch with a stainless 102" whip but have read alot about grounding problems. So I am going with a magnetic mount & I do want the ability to disconnect the whip to access parking garages. (not always having to remove the magnetic base) With that being said, my only choices are the Stryker A10 mag mount or the Sirio Performer 5000 mag mount. I like how the Sirio has a lever that you loosen & the whip will tilt back & lay flat. But I also like that the Stryker has 18' of RG-8X vs the 13' of RG-58 coaxial. (You can unthread the Styker @ the coil from the mag base) So I haven't bought the mag mount antenna yet. I hope that this helps.

Any more details about Rago grounding issue? Was going to order for use with with a fire stik.

I believe 2 different members on this forum had problems with grounding. Don't remember who it was tho'.

Not to sidetrack too far, but what is your primary purpose for the radio? Just a question to ask yourself before you get too far down the rabbit hole.
-Is CB the best radio for your needs or GMRS (or something else) better?

No it’s a good question. It’s mainly just for general communication but I’d like to have another option. I already have GMRS. CBs have a longer range.

Search for the thread "lets see those CB antenna mounts"

There are 15 pages & that is where the grounding issues are mentioned.

I also use mine for road trips, locating speed cops & accident (back-ups) reports in case I need to detour an exit or 2 early.

I have a K40 mag mount antenna from my previous 4R. It worked very well for my 4 watt Cobra 25, but my CB tech said the Stryker & Sirio will give me more range with the higher watt radio.
