sn0wrunner, you will be real lucky to get a 5 mile range, UNLESS you had the radio "tuned and peaked" then, you "might" get 10 miles, and remember, the moutains will cut your range, Ive got the same set-up, talk to your dad, and talk to the guys at Radio Service Center, they are also HAM guys, but deal mainly in CBs as all the wheelers get there stuff from them, lol
I cant see an off the shelf CB reaching China, lol maybe if the antenna is on the Sears tower lol. they just dont have the power to get out there, they are not designed, for it.. HAMS on the other hand, you can talk from here to the other side of the planet, using repeaters, my buddies dad had one in HS, and one time he was talking to a guy in Russia, I thought it was cool, but he had lots of cash in his set up.
Either way, you will LOVE it on the trail, and when driving on the highways, if ya see traffic, turn the radio on, the truckers will tell you what lane is open, whats going on etc. :bigok:
