CB Mounting Location...?

Im new to the CB world but would like to install one before FJ Summit. Im considering mounting the unit in the small storage compartment below the AC controls right in front of the transfer case shifter. The Uniden Bearcat 880 seems as though it would be a nice fit after some trimming on the storage compartment. Has anyone else tried installing into this location? Do you see any major flaws in my plan?

Granted most people still use CBs because they are cheap and don't need a license. I will never have one in my truck again though.

Well, I guess that makes it a bad idea for summit, since a CB is required and out of the 300 vehicles going, i suspect only a handful will have HAM

If you were going to go that route, you could always get a linear for your CB. Back in the day we had one in our farm truck and it would make the TV go stupid if you key the mike by the house..

The easiest install is the cobra 75wx. Just put the small box (it's very small) under the seat or in the console.... All the controls are on the mic.

I just finished installing my Bearcat in the console. I thought about putting it in that pocket you're talking about but the mic cord was going to be exiting the unit right over the cup holder and would be a hassle.
With the unit in the console I can throw the mic back in when I'm not on the trail and maintain a clean look. I also installed a remote 3" speaker under the driver's seat, pointed forward. Surprisingly it sounds like the CB sound is coming through the factory speakers.
True, you will have to open the console to change settings but it's not that big of a deal. I will post some pictures tonight...

I also installed my Uniden in the center console, super stealth and there when you need it, also ran a Wilson 1000 Mag mount up on the roof it fits between the rook rack rails so I can unscrew the antenna whip when I don't need it. I also will admit I find myself using my Ham radio more than anything I have a Baofeng UV5R and a bought a better antenna for it and for being a handheld it has some impressive range, and is crystal clear. The ham radio test is pretty easy all the questions on the test are on-line as public knowledge so just study a little bit and I'm sure you will pass it. The other nice thing with my HAM is I can talk to GMRS/FRS "Costco,Walmart ect 2-way radios" on low transmitting power and hear everyone crystal clear.

Newsflash, CB sucks. That is all.

And at FJ Summit the CBs barely worked. I had to pass out HAM radios, because I'm not from the early 1900s.

Just got my Baofeng mounted in a good spot. Bracket from Expedition Portal and mounts are from RAM. I can get more detailed pix later. Cell phone pix for now.

BTW: I have the Cobra 75 CB as well. Pix of that install some other time.

That's a a lot of cables all over! If I was starting from scratch I would have skipped pulling out my cobra 75 for the bearcat 980ssb and just gone Ham.

Once work slows down I am going to study up...

Hacking up my center console was kinda fun though...

One cable is for the iPhone, one for aux input and one for the remote mic on the baofeng. So grand scheme of thing don't really.
