Thinking of getting a CBI rear plate bumper. I don't want a swing tire carrier, but does anybody happen to know how big of a spare tire will fit underneath in the factory location with this bumper installed? Will a 32" or 33" fit? The guys at CBI were unsure, so I'm looking for someone with firsthand knowledge. Anyone?

It may be hard to get a for sure answer to this since most don't use the stock location for clearance reasons off-road. However, I've read that some have cleared a 33" in the stock location, but if I remember correctly it had to deflated some.
Understood. My '98 4runner is my son's DD, but we will also use it for camping and going off-road. For that reason, I don't want the hassle of a swing-carrier. For any serious off-roading, I will just remove the spare from the bottom and either put it on the roof or in the back.
Anybody else have experience with keeping a spare underneath with the CBI plate bumper? Would anyone with this setup care to try to fit a 32" or 33" tire under there and see how it works?

In the CBI bumper thread there is a guy with a 33in spare under there but yes he has to deflate it to 8 pounds I think? To squeeze it in. He has portable air to pump it up if needed of course

I think maybe they don't know because there are so many mods people do they can't be sure what is going to work and what won't. I guess they should have a basic idea of a no-mod (except the bumper) clearance for each generation of each vehicle they make them for.

Yes, they did assure me that a stock sized tire (265/70/r17 in this case) would fit. Beyond that, there are SO many different tire sizes
and not even every, say, 285/X is even the same size...So something around a stock (31.5/.6 inch) tire is no problem, and apparently up to a 33 if you deflate it is workable (Though probably hangs down WELL below the bumper for a good clearance loss).
Going to see how my stock 265 spare looks, may go for one of the 255/75/r17's for more clearance.

It is a little odd, but CBI said they hadn't done any testing with different sized tires to see what would fit, so they do not know for sure. Still, there's really not that many sizes to test...and you don't have to test them all. I assume the diameter would be the big factor whether it will fit or not, so just test any 32", and a 33" tire and see how it works, right??

BTW, here's a photo of the damage from the accident. My son was driving home with his little brother when it happened. They are fine, but it kind of shook them up. The other driver was at fault and his insurance is taking care of the repair.
The hitch took most of the impact. The bumper was bent downwards, and had a few small dents and scratches. And of course you can see the damage to the lift gate, and there's a little body damage under the left tail light. The lift gate still opens just fine, but I never tried to roll down the window. Wiper still works. Looking underneath, I couldn't see any frame damage, so hopefully it wasn't bent.
I'm hoping the cost to cover the hitch and bumper materials will come out close to what a new off-road bumper would cost (approx. $1000). It's at the repair shop right now; they are taking it apart to get a better estimate of what the repair will cost and haggling out the final details with the insurance company. They seemed willing to work with me when I mentioned I would like to get a different type of bumper/hitch rather than an OEM replacement. There's still a chance they declare it a total loss due to the age of the vehicle, but let's hope that doesn't happen...

Good question, especially since that was the whole point of this thread in the first place...
The stock 31" tire (which I still have) fits in there fine, with a little extra room. I'm guessing a 32" would probably fit ok, but not sure about a 33". One note, I do have it installed with the bumper probably pushed towards the front of the vehicle as far as it will go. I may loosen up the bolts, slide it back a little bit and take some hard measurements while I'm at it. I will post results when I get them.
I took a closer look at the bumper this past weekend. I loosened the bolts and slid it back as far as it would go (wasn't much further than originally installed; I maybe gained another 1/4" at most).
The distance measured from the back of the hitch receiver to the frame crossmember is about 31". The stock 31" spare fits with no problem, with about an inch of room remaining (that's because tires are rounded, and the tallest part of the tire is on the center of the tread...). I figure a 32" tire would probably fit ok, but a 33" would be a challenge indeed.

zombie thread warning... but I'm curious and interested in the bumper too.
maybe others can chime in... but...
if a 31 inch tire has 1 inch clearance...
wouldn't the 33 inch tire fit (just barely)...
a 32 inch would have a 1/2 inch clearance...
being the tires center won't change.
