CBI vs Shrockworks rear plate with tire carrier

That was my video the OP linked to. I will add that I had a 35" tire and the latching mechanism was the old auger screw pin stye, which in my opinion was not the most secure method.

As for the wobble, I do believe it was partially in the swing arm design. I've come to terms with the fact that no matter what, every tire carrier will have some wobble to it. For me though, I felt the wobble was excessive. It was excessive enough that it actually made for awful vehicle handling on washboard highways/roads. Any additional wobble from any other source just made it worse. I don't know if there was a flaw in the bumper or not. I sold the bumper before troubleshooting any further.

I'll also make the case that the rear portion of our frames is VERY weak. Add the additional 100's of lbs, especially overhanging weight and you can physically see it tweak at the end rails. For this reason alone, I think it's almost crucial to weld in a support cross beam to strengthen the rear of the frame horns for additional weight. You're ridding of the spare tire under the vehicle anyways.

If I do go with another rear swing out bumper, I would love to give CBI another try. Especially with the new latch system. However, this time I don't plan on a full length swing arm or any gas can carrier. I'll also upgrade the rear body mounts and likely weld up a cross beam to strengthen the end of the frame rails. I kind of also want the hybrid to cut back on some weight.

Shrockwork's original prototype is still going strong.

For any wobble issues with CB&I or Shrockworks, consider using a foam mat as a spacer to be wedged inbetween the hatch and the tire carrier. Some benefits:
- Diffuses the tire carrier's load on the hatch.
- Dampens/Kills vibrations if done right.
- Easy access mat for working underneath the rig while wheeling.
- Can be used for original purpose, yogamizing or sleeping.
- Looks prepared, but that's optional.

How hard is it to install the Shrockworks rear bumper with swing out arm? I'm thinking about getting in on the Summer 2017 group buy going on right now but not sure if I can tackle it myself, let alone if there is any cutting or welding required, I'd be toast!

No cutting or welding, bumper bolts right up. You would have to have superpowers to mount this beast by yourself though due to its size/weight. Guaranteed a two person job.
The crate it came in was bigger than a coffin.

Oh man, dont tempt me on a GB. I busted a few bolts getting my stock bumper off.....probably wont go back on very tight.

I've had my CBI for 4 years now. I had the wobble pretty bad at first. Wobble would shake the hatch which caused loud rattle bang really piss you off kind of noise:ybrick: Plus bumper would hit the body, again shiver me timbers kind of bang. Lesson learned. If you add a heavy bumper in the rear you have to install Sonoran 's rear body mounts. Body no longer comes it contact with bumper. Had to replace the rubber mounts on the sides of the hatch. I still have a little wobble but it doesn't cause near the noise. I'm still digging my CBI. And once again Sonoran steel is correct and has the fix. To bad he doesn't make bumpers anymore.

So 15% off with the new SW GB saves me around $253. That's like free shipping & powdercoat! Hmmmm!!!!!! My Birthday is the 21st! LOL

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on one of these. I could care less about the wait time as long as it's done right. Couple of things first. Can someone show me a modified SW fully configured with;

  • Shovel
  • Trasharoo
  • Traction boards
  • License plate off the tire with lights
  • Hi Lift jack
  • Worthington propane tank
  • Fuel
  • Water
  • Additional lighting (back up lights) in the bumper

Tall order but that's what I'm looking for out of a bumper to clean off the top of my roof rack.

EDIT: The closest I've come to seeing the configuration I want was on Expedition Overland Central America and it was a modified dual swing out CBI. I lean towards CBI for this reason and the aesthetics. This is why I decided to forego the spring GB for Shrockworks.

Update: while returning from my last road trip I decided to replace the broken pin that holds my CBI (can't brake it?) Swing out open. It was a Sunday afternoon so got a room in Idaho Falls then I could stop in at Cbi, get a new pin and be be on my way. Long story short, Cbi is now a bicycle shop that has a couple bumpers. No parts for the bumper but plenty of bike parts, what ever you could need. But good luck getting something as small as a pull pin.

Shrockworks has been great to work with through a front bumper build and they certainly beat the shipping times they suggested, but as for rear tire carriers go who's the great craftsman for this bumper? I believe runnyrunnerton also has this bumper but haven't got contact with him to know where it was made. Any one else know?
