Wow this is one clean restoration! Makes me want a 1st gen now..
Did you put on the decal stripes yourself, or did you have them professionally installed? I'm thinking about getting a new set, but I don't want to mess it up.

Thanks! They were installed before I took ownership. Probably a good thing because even though they are a bit forgiving to install, I might have messed up one of them. Here's the decal source www.jamesdeancreations.com/1987-88.htm.

My sunroof is an aftermarket, not OEM. I picked up the replacement from TG Automotive. Here is the Autoport 1530 that was an exact match and fit for me - SFC Autoport 1530 Complete Sunroof Kit

Depending on how old your sunroof is, you might be able to get a replacement weather strip. Mine was the older design and I could not find an exact weatherstrip replacement.

Hood release and start of the engine bay clean up

The hood release cable broke at the latch a few weeks ago and while waiting for the new cable I decided to start cleaning the engine bay. I cleaned the area between the coolant overflow and power steering reservoir, and that took a good 4+ hours.

Used both a wire brush and a brass wire wheel on a dremel tool to rid the metal parts of rust and oxidation, and soapy water and degreaser to clean the grime and grease ...

Cleaned and repainted the mass air flow ...

After brushing and polishing the power steering reservoir (it still needs more work) I created reproduction decals for it using Adobe Illustrator graphics software and a color laser printer. I printed them on waterproof silver polyester label sheets from OnlineLabels.com. This one in the pic below is my first attempt and if you look close at the ends of the top label you can see the old one underneath. The radius needs some tweaking to get it to be an exact OEM match ...

Decals

Fixed the radius on the PS Caution Decal. Now it sits right on top of the old one ...

Also, made an reproduction Automatic decal for the Tailgate. The OEM is a rectangle decal with lettering, and my version is free floating letters ...

haha. If it was anything other than a turbo, I would probably do the swap. Can't bring myself to mess with it like that, at least not right now.

I don't know too much about the history of the Automatic sticker other than what I've seen, so maybe the sticker was limited to DLX and turbo. I based my decision purely on these photos...

I haven't removed the b-piller trim, just the badge. I worked the badges free with a plastic pry tool. They're held in with an adhesive.

Thanks. I like everything about my new sunroof. Darker glass, nicer looking trim, improved handle, and the glass is easier to remove. If you need to cover up exposed metal like I had to, the Black Jack is an inexpensive alternative. A few coats of black rattle can paint around the opening should also work.

Humm... well now I'm even more confused. So your thinking that all 86 / 87 automatics had the sticker? Of the restros I've seen I had never seen one with that sticker. Wouldn't have been a canadian thing could it?

I'm thinking Toyota might have made a slight change in 86/87 and put automatic stickers on the 4Runner Turbo models. It could have been a Canadian only thing, but the commercial doesn't seem Canadian.
I'm 1 for 1 with asking Toyota for clarification on historical facts so I'll send them this question and post their response.

Been away from the site for a bit so you may have already replaced your sunroof. I called the main office and ordered a tube of the black jack seam sealer over the phone because they did not have a local retailer. 1 tube was enough for me. If you can borrow or rent a power sealer gun, do it. Squeezing the trigger on those double tube sealers fitted with the mixing tube with a manual gun was difficult to do it quickly. I can't speak for the 3m sealer. I went with black jack because the local body shop recommended it.

Ha ha. The best they could do was make a decision based on the 1987 sales brochure. They concluded the Automatic sticker was not used on the 1987 turbo because there was not a photo on the brochure. Not a reliable conclusion IMO.
