CEL P0330 Knock sensor issues

Is there a write up for replacing knock sensors in anyones build thread? I've searched but there's not really any pictures and I'm about to shred this Haynes manual trying to find it here. Check engine light is on (P0330 Knock sensor bank 2) and it's running horrible. Any help is appreciated.

The knock sensor is underneath the intake manifold. Are you sure its not something else that is triggering the knock sensor code.

Before you start tearing out the intake assembly check your knock sensor harness since a knock sensor almost never goes bad. It's more likely that an animal ate some wires than than the sensor actually went bad. If you find that everything looks good then you will have to remove most of the intake assembly.

Thanks for the help, I almost have the intake manifold and all that other stuff out. While I have it apart is there anything else i should check or replace? Also I had a bolt break off on the lower part of the manifold whats the most cost effective way to get the rest of it out, heres a pic.

Take the intake the rest of the way off so you can grab onto whats left sticking up of that bolt. Try either a stud puller or vice grips with a generous helping of your favorite penetrating oil before getting too carried away.

So i got the whole top end out and finally got to the knock sensors. Anyone know a site that would have the wire harness? All the main stores (Autozone, Advance Auto, Pep Boys) don't carry them. I'm sure i could go to a dealer and get it but I'd rather just order it since i work on weekdays. As I get things put back together I'll get some pictures and do a little write up since i couldn't find one on here.

edit: also did you test you're knocks sensors? and if so how? If i don't need to replace the knock sensors I'm not going to, it looks like it was the wires on mine that caused the P0330 CEL code.

I wouldn't mind doing a write up. Maybe I'll do that next, I just started using this forum so I'm still trying to figure everything out.
There really isn't that reliable of a way to text a knock sensor at all. What I did do was test the wire harnessing with a Volt Ohm Meter first to make sure it was the knock sensor and not the harness throwing the code. My wire harnessing was good so I tested my luck and prayed it actually was the Knock sensor. Thank God it was :D! I was stoked when the engine light turned off.
Also while you're in that deep there's a bunch of other stuff you could do / replace if they need it: Definitely replace the intake manifold gasket seals. Clean your Fuel Injectors / replace O rings if you want (I skipped that). Replace the spark plugs. Replace the Valve Cover Gasket Seals if needed. Clean the shit out of everything!!!! haha
Also, I bought a salvaged knock sensor instead of a brand new one - WAY CHEAPER and it works great. Sonya, my 4runner haha, purred after words.

you must have other problems then, a knock sensor wont make it run bad.

The knock sensor being out absolutely DOES make your rig run like shit. It makes your car run sluggish and slow not to mention burns through your gas way faster. I makes it feel as if your car is missing a lot of power.

seriously? thats crazy. must be different for different rigs. im sure ive ran with them unplugged before without issue.

Yeah, I have the CEL light for both knock sensors. The truck runs and I drive it quite a bit but it does seem sluggish and my gas mileage sucks pretty bad. I figure since the code is throwing for both I probably have a bad harness...I hope.
 
When you have knock codes the computer will completely retard the timing, thats why it runs ruff... I did the harness on my rig (from Toyota, $15 and was in stock), put it all back together and the code poped again... Pulled it all apart again and put a new sensor in... By the way the sensor bench checked good, but was in fact bad.
 
Good info in here... I had already ordered the sensor through Amazon Prime for $70 before I read that it might be the wire harness. But I will check tonight.

Seems like a lot more work than I anticipated!

So, I've got it apart and replaced both sensors.

I am having trouble with the harness. It runs out the front of the engine but it's stuck and I can't pull it through. I see where it starts and ends but it's ran very tight out the front and in between the cam wheels.

Maybe the knock sensoe or maybe not.

Unfortunately I have a code device but it is useless. Cheap shit asks for a code for my toyota. No idea what that may be, no manual. So, I have a 2012 4Runner 4wd and it has an intermittent problem. On a hot day or a long drive it suddenly turns sluggish or if idling the engine will stop. Turning off the ignition and turning it on again resets whatever and it runs great again. The symptoms do not quite sound like a knock sesnor or a air temperature sensor and without a code to go by I am in the dark. Parts are not easy to get here in the Patagonia and even less legitimate parts. Many rejected aftermarket parts are purchased from China and sold as good with no returns or complaints.
Any advice on the symptoms?

Unfortunately I can’t be of any direct help. Try taking it by am auto parts store and they should be able to scan for codes. By the way this is the 3rd gen section 1996-2002, and you have a 5th gen.
