I replaced my front o2 sensor with DENSO 2344162 (234-4162) and now I have a CEL (p1133). The engine surges in low RPM's and my mileage went down the toilet. When I got the sensor the plug was different, same size and style but the raised ridged on the sides where in different spots so I repinned my old connector on to the new sensor, put all wires exactly where they were on the old plug. Only thing i can think is maybe I got the 2 black wires backwards (i doubt it but anything is possible) Any ideas what the hell is going on?

I think you put an H2O sensor on where it needs an AF sensor. Take it off and install the correct senor.

Just my opinion though.

What Singtoe said. You almost certainly have a Cali. emissions truck. '99 Cali.'s were sold all over the country, including my bought-in-NJ rig. Look underneath and see if you have two cats, or check your emissions label. Then go here to get the correct part number. Save the 234-4162 and use it when the rear one goes (P0420 or P0141)--it will work fine there.

The A/F sensors have a different plug to prevent people from doing exactly what you did.

Singtoe: "H2O" sensor?? :)

just went outside and layed under the truck, and damn, wrong o2....gotta spend twice as much now to get the right one, ****in' figures....

Don't feel bad man.. I just went thru the same damn thing but I spent $3000 on new stuff tryin' to get rid of the surging.. I have no idea why they even sale front O2's for CA emissions T4R's of this model... You'd think somethin' would pop up & say "This part does not exist, try the A/F ratio sensor"... Lessons learned.. Glad you were able to catch it quick..

Who sells a front O2 for a Cali. 4Runner?? Never seen it and it won't even plug in. Somewhere it says "exc. Cali.," I suspect. What does happen is you get drill-down listings that never ask you if it is a Cali. truck, but the item should specify.
