white smoke smells sweet/burnt. Idles/Starts/Runs really rough. No overheating on short drive, coolant level normal. Nothing dripping underneath. Please help me! I'm supposed to go out of town tomorrow.

Small bit of liquid coming out of the exhaust as well. I disconnected battery for a while and reconnected in hopes of reseting some sensors etc. Light's are gone (haven't driven it), but symptoms still present.

seeing as your supercharged have you checked your plugs or filters, how many miles are on your truck? I would check the fuel filter if it you could but since its built in you might need to buy a whole new pump.

It's getting dark here and I don't want to start pulling stuff apart without lights (I live in an apartment at school, so it's hard to get lighting at night to work). I'll be up at 6:45 am tomorrow going at the plugs. Fuel filter is in the tank, yes? Also I guess I should mention that this happened all at once going up a small hill 62,7XX miles

Definitely going for the plugs first. I had pretty much the same thing happen to my corolla last year. One of the plugs just went bad/burned all of a sudden. The only thing that worries me is I don't remember it smoking...

Here's what I got:

New plugs are $13.89 each. I bought them, but am debating putting them in for fear of it happening again right away. What do you guys think? I should have probably gotten the codes read first before I pulled everything apart.

since you pulled the old ones out you might as well put the new ones in. I'm sure you know this but check the gap and torque specs. I do it like 3 or 4 times on mine. the three on the far right look very dirty. what kind of plugs did you get?

Got the same plugs. That's what I was thinking. Really it's the two on the right that are the worst, but that third one in looks almost as bad as well. I just got a code reader and it turned up code PO113...something about "intake air temperature circuit high". Looking it up now. I got the same plugs from toyota.

P0113, P0300, P0303, P0305, P0307

All after new plugs put in. Three cylinders misfiring. Took it to Toyota. They probably won't look at it until Monday. Guess we're taking the Ford on our road trip :(

Sounds like a blown head gasket. Check the color/condition of the oil.Good luck!

We'll see what Toyota says, I don't have the time to mess with it anymore because I am leaving for the weekend :( I realize it could be the HG. I'm just really hoping that's not the case. I was also thinking this...

Rough Idle/Sputtering/CEL/Misfire = Coil pack problems

But if it ends up being the HG....that shouldn't be too hard to replace I don't think. The supercharger won't make it any easier though.

I know! Fingers crossed please boys. Anyway, I'm going to have to forget about it for now because otherwise it's going to ruin my weekend. I'll update as soon as the dealership calls and tells me what they *think* is wrong with it lol

This is one of those times I wish I could have brought my trusty Toyota/Lexus mechanic from Naples with me too school.

I would rather not be the one saying this but normally white smoke is water/coolant. Since it smells sweet and coolant is made with glycol I would venture to bet it is a head gasket. I know there was an issue with superchargers with these motors and thats why they are hard to find. I do also know that the 4runner motor is made stronger than the tundra/seq motors so hopefully just a head gasket. If it does turn out to be a head gasket make sure they send the head to a maching shop to make sure its not warped. Also if it is the head gaskets see how much more it would cost to do the other side while half the motor is apart. Maybe when they do the head job the machine shop can put stonger/better spring and flow the heads better for your S/C. I will keep my finger crossed for you this weekend and waiting to see what happens.

Keep us updated. If nothing else, it will be good to have in the archives. I concur with the post above about coolant. That's never a good sign when you get lots of smoke of any color. White or black smoke equals burning something. When it has an odor like that then it's usually coolant. Oil has an entirely different smell and we all have seen and smelled it before as it is so common on older cars. Luckily it is becoming less and less common as engine quality has increased over the years.

Those of us who can remember riding around in the 70's can remember how many cars were blasting out massive amounts of burning oil because the engines were so crappy!

Best of luck.

Forget to add... my brother experienced the same codes on his Sienna minivan. He was getting a lot of smoke as well, but it wasn't sweet smelling. Plugs were fouled pretty badly like yours. His was caused by sludge and then bad rings. He was getting tons of blow-by. The sludge issue was clearly a manufacturing defect, but Toyota refused to pay for it because they claimed that in order to qualify he had to prove that he had service done every 3,000 miles (WTF? That's not even the recommended service interval in his manual!) and it had to be done and documented at a Toyota dealership. So they were denying claims if you didn't use their service, which is 100% against the Magnusson Moss act. Look it up and be prepared to fight if the dealership wants to be jerks.

I've been through a similar situation on a head gasket with Chrysler (what a mess!) and they had replaced it twice under warranty. As soon as the warranty was up it happened again. Of course it was due to their faulty initial repairs in warranty and I did everything I was supposed to. It happened again outside of warranty, which was THEIR fault. They refused to fix it. I brought up Magnusson Moss and their tune changed. I have no idea whether it was even covered under that act, but the fact that I knew about it seemed to scare them. They then claimed they would do a "one time good will repair" on it. I said that wasn't acceptable, and they'd do it until they got it right whether it took them once or 10 times. They'd already had two cracks at it and blown it. Luckily there was a redesigned part and I printed off the freaking TSB for them and made them use the correct and redesigned head gasket. There's a reason I don't drive Chryslers anymore. CRAP.

Don't back down. If you don't like what you hear right away then try another dealership or call corporate. Spend as much time on the phone as needed. Make sure they get it right.
