Cell Phone Mount - Windshield?

Just curious if anyone is using a windshield mounted system for your cell phone. I am going to Moab in a few weeks, I have the Trails Off Road app and would like to have my phone mounted. I've read several threads about Ram mounts and the like, but they all require drilling or screwing into my interior. I would like to avoid that if all possible. Are the windshield mounts good enough to stay on a trail that's bounding everything around? I found this one on Amazon (Amazon.com: APPS2Car Suction Cup Phone Holder Windshield/Dashboard/Window, Universal Dashboard & Windshield Suction Cup Car Phone Mount with Strong Sticky Gel Pad, Compatible with iPhone, Samsung &Other Cellphone : Cell Phones & Accessories). Anyone using something like this?

One more little tidbit: the temptation is to mount the suction cup to the windshield at the edge, next to the driver’s side a-pillar. I had mounted a Garmin In-Reach there, and at an inopportune moment the suction cup let go and the In-Reach almost bounced out the open window. It was saved by the USB cable, but if it hadn’t been plugged in …

Take appropriate precautions. :-)

I use a Scoschi Grip-It windshield suction cup all purpose holder. I use it primarily to hold my old Garmin hand held GPS unit. Because the GPS is relatively heavy, I mount it so that the GPS is resting atop the dash. Never had it come loose or pop off the windshield that way.

I bought it quite a few years ago at Walmart. Today Scoschi sells basically the same unit under another name. It’s a pretty substantial unit and adjustable to fit just about anything.

A suggestion: moisten the suction cup with an alcohol wipe or water before sticking the base of any windshield mount to the windshield. It enhances the seal of the suction cup.

Another thing, I find that the GPS receives signals much better on my 5th Gen if mounted toward the center of the windshield. In my old ‘02 Tacoma TRD I used it over against the driver side A pillar without issue; but on my current rig, it doesn’t read as well in that location. May or may not affect your cell phone using your app.

I have that exact mount on the lower middle part of my windshield. I've never had it in Moab, but I can say that it is a really sticky feeling (has stickum on it) suction cup. Even "unlocked" it sticks really well. It telescopes, so I'm sure if you have it all the way in you won't have any issues. I always had my heavy a** IPhone XR with big Otterbox case on it and it never fell off, even telescoped all the way out.

Like you, I didn't want anything huge, to spend a lot or want to drill. I'd say it's been well worth the low $12 entry fee. Suits my needs just fine.
 
Also use the Lab Ops with Magnet Bulitt mount. Also have a Ram Mount which is usually in the center console. Ram mount better for offroad. For daily driving the Magnetic Bulitt mount more convenient. I never use the Lab Ops power. Next time I'd skip the power connection.

Agree. No drilling, no screwing, not attached to vent vanes, very strong. I use mine when doing the most demanding off roads in Western Colorado. It has never fallen off.

Suction cup mounts just don't cut it. When ever I have used suction cups, they always fall off, especially when they get warm from the sun.

I have the LabOps mount in my 4Runner. It works well for my phone and an Inreach Mini. Installation was straightforward.

It flexes a bit more over bumps than I'd like, especially if something is hanging forward (towards you) from the Ram ball mounts. I resolved this by using some small pieces of clear plastic tubing to brace the phone mount on the dash beside the vent.
