Center cap benefits?

Installing a set of Pro Comp wheels on my 5th gen 4Runner LE. Are the center caps necessary, or just there for looks? I prefer the look without them, but if they keep junk out of someplace I'll put them on.

I have mine one because the end of the axle is under it.
