center console feature???

This is on my 2007 SE. What is it for? Writing space so you can write a novel? It's worthless for holding your phone going around corners! Just wondering what it's purpose was. :D I haven't seen any write ups or mentions on this feature.

HA! I think I used it once to write down some information on the back of my business card and that's about it.

I think it would make sense to have that surface covered in that tacky stuff like those dash pads where you can put your cell phone and it wont slip off. Instead it's just hard plastic and nothing stays there. I even stored business cards under it when closed but they all sip out the front of it.

Just trying to find out what Toyota was thinking there and what it's intended usage was. :confused:

When I go on a long road trip with rear passengers, I'll open up the tray thingy, open the center console and prop it up and tie down a portable 9" DVD player on to the tray. The lip of the tray holds the DVD player perfectly from sliding down. To prevent the center console from slamming down closed, I get elastic tied to the console and dvd player to the driver and passenger head rests. The DVD player sits at a perfect eye level. (By hooking up the audio out to the 4R's aux port, I have the perfect poor man's entertainment system) ;):
 
I use that tray all the time. Once I got used to knowing that it's there, I open it for all kinds of stuff, like my mp3 player, sandwich or burger, soda or other drink (just have to watch it on turns, that's all), pens/pads for writing. Stuff like that. I find it to be pretty handy myself.
 
The sales guy told me it was a burger/fries tray. I find it to be useless. I'm pretty sure there is another one in the back center armrest.
 

It holds a Burger King Whopper just perfectly.......trust me! Turn it up slightly at the end and it will keep it in place when you have to stop at a traffic signal.

Since we Americans (as a whole) have gotten used to eating more and more fast food in our cars, it only makes sense that the car makers find ways to accommodate our ever-expanding appetites and girth.

Look at cars on the market nowadays. The seats are wider than ever before - to match the drivers, I guess. Radio buttons are larger, to be better-suited to our fat fingers; and many SUVs have running boards as standard equipment so we can hoist our fat badonkadonk butts up into the cab.

NOTE: The average person gains 5 pounds during the holidays, so I feel fortunate to have only put on 4.

yeah me too other than an occasional writing surface. I guess I'll go to Ace Hardware and get that tacky solid shelf paper ( http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(diykl045ypxl2055i5lrxmms)/productDetails.aspx?SKU=6125116 ) and cut and fit some so I can use it for my phone and ipod

I went out to my car and lift the console up. I saw what you mean. Thank you for a great idea. I will use it next time on the long trip. It looks really "stock" from the rear too.

Instead of use elastic ties, I will use welcro to hold the DVD player in place. Great ideas.:awais:

My brother in law does it in his MDX but of course he doesn't have this "handy tray". So when we went on our trip to Napa, he attached it without the tray open and the DVD player kept getting crooked. (MDX center console is soft and kinda spongy so the DVD player stays were fixed). I told him to open the mini tray and "voila" the DVD player holder was born. :cool:
 
I used some 2-sided tape to put a stack of post-it notes on the upper half of the tray. When you fold it open, the post-its are in a good writing position and won't move when you're trying to write with one hand.

There's a larger size of post-its that fit great.....I think they're 2"x4".

Ditto! I also found a mechanical pencil that will fit in there with the thing closed. Every so often I will need to quickly jot something down while driving. The Post-its (actually the 3x3 fits best) are handy if I need to leave a quick note for someone too.
