August 22nd is good for me. A Charlottesville meetup location makes sense to me.

How necessary are a/t tires on the trails that people have mentioned. Sadly I'm still on stock h/t tires.

You will be able to complete it.. Probably just minor wheel spin at spots.

hearno mentioned to me a while back that he liked the Flag Pole Run. I never got to try it during my recent visit to GWNF so I would like to do that, but I'm content to just do some exploring. GWNF is gorgeous and I just love driving through it and soaking it all in.

Ever since I heard about Mount Rogers, I've always wanted to visit, but that is DEEP south VA.

I grew up at the base of Mt. Rogers, and my family still lives there. Shoot me a PM if you ever make it down that way and I'll point you to a some decent trails. A lot of the rough stuff I used to play on in my Jeeps has been closed off by the forest service, but there's still some nice trail rides to be done. I particularly like making a run up to Pine Mountain when I'm visiting the folks.

Did you make that waypoint trail yourself? I'm looking for a good handheld gps device, but there are so many choices and there are haters and fanboys for each one so its hard to make a decision.

Definitely let me know if you head that way. I live in FL now, but I do a lot of work in that area, so I'm there pretty regularly.

I just mapped that trail using Google. It's a marked forest road, and while it wouldn't let me do driving directions up there, it would let me do walking directions. The Appalachian Trail crosses through the campground at the endpoint on Pine Mt. That's up around 5700ft IIRC.

The locals call that the corral. It's a fenced in area used to round up heards cattle and ponies that are left loose on the mountain. That's as far as you can go in the truck, but there's good hiking all around.

It's also a good place to camp in the summer. There's no potable water but there are outhouses. One of the best places for star gazing I've ever been to in the continental US. If there's any kind of meteor shower or other event going on there will be about a dozen a amateur astronomers up there with telescopes they have to put on trailers.
