Changed my own oil for first time -- any pointers?

Hi All,

I changed my oil on my 98 4runner, 4wd 2.7L.

Based off of the research I have done here, I used a Mobil-1 Oil Filter and Pennzoil 5W-30 (upcoming Winter here) Conventional. I took one piece of the skid plate off and took that nut out, drained the oil, and then took the old filter on, and let it all drain. I then put the nut back in, put the new oil filter from underneath the car, and then refilled the oil before putting the new skid plate back on. Is there anything else I missed? Any tips for routine maintenance while I'm down there? For instance, I saw a few threads saying that it is recommended to change that bolt & washer that keeps the oil from coming out.

Just curious so that next time around, I am better prepared -- thank you!

I have never once ever replaced a crush washer on the bolt and I have never had any leaks. Clean off the surface of the bolt and pan and you should be okay. I am.

I have had crush washers leak on me but not usually until they had been used at least 3 times. I change mine every third oil change which is once every three years.

To reinforce what was previously said, it is good to replace the crush washer, mine started to leak after my first oil change with this vehicle and so I replaced it with my next oil change, I think it has been at least two changes at 5000 mile intervals and it is still not torn up. It is a simple and cheap way to keep there from being dark spots on your driveway.

Here's a pointer to minimize oil spills from the oil filter.

Cover the oil filter in a gallon sized zip lock bag, loosen it and drop the filter into the bag before it starts to spill. Piece of cake!

I didn't even know there was supposed to be a crush washer...I've never used one and never leaked or had any issues.
