Charcoal canister rebuild?

I got the emission large leak code in the wife's 2007 Sport Edition and after a bit of research, realized I had a bad habit of adding more gas after the pump shut off. After some troubleshooting tips from related threads here, I'm sure it will require a new canister and I can imagine what they would want to charge for it up here in Canada. I found this video and I'm curious if anybody has tried it here?

For $20 to $30 it's worth a shot, make sure you update us if it does or doesn't work!!

Just an FYI, a new canister is $500+ and up US, it's the same part number for either engine!!

Which makes the rebuild attempt even more attractive, just take your time getting the canister opened so you don't break the plastic and it should work, I think if you heat the razor it may help, if you break the plastic you may have a hard time getting a seal when you put it back together, and if that's the case try getting another at a savage yard, which may work without rebuilding it!!!

I didn't realize "topping off" was bad for anything. Care to link the troubleshooting guides?

Have you considered deleting the emissions system and tuning the fuel timing at a dyno shop?

oits probably the purge valve stuck open which you can replace. YOu can test it with a battery Also get yourself a vacuum pump and you can find where the leak is.

On a different vehicle I faced the same issue $400+ canister, I cross referenced the part number and found that it was the same canister on many different models and was able to score a canister with purge valve and some hoses for $7! Fixed my issue.

Happened to my GMC Acadia. Yup, it was the purge valve. It was getting really hard the start the car right after filling up at the pump. Had the evap codes. Purge valve was dirt cheap. Never had a problem again.

another options is to check ebay for a used one. I got a used one for around $75 last year.

Thanks for the responses. I guess the first thing to do is check the purge valve. Maybe I'll get lucky but sometimes I was adding another 5 to 6 bucks worth of extra gas before going on a road trip so I suspect the cannister is toast.

Purge valve, IMO, would go first. It's just a few buck, super cheap. Who knows, you might get lucky as hell.

All the information about the evap canister really opened my mind.

I bought a 40 ounce container of activated carbon for an aquarium, I opened my evap canister, emptied the contaminated carbon out. Cleaned the canister, replaced the filter cloth with aquarium filter cloth, refilled evap canister with new carbon, mixed the epoxy and glued the canister back together. I reassembled everything, and for the first time in 4 months, I have a full tank of gas, without the pump kicking of 50 times.

The information was perfect, and I saved $340.00
