If you've ever been in the military you can save a ton of money on insurance with a company called USAA. It's membership only for military personnel, kind of like a credit union. If you can qualify it's extremely cheap but you have to join just to get a quote. The ads on TV talk about good service but never mention how cheap it is and they show young people in uniform so it sounds like you have to be on active duty but anyone who's ever been in the military can probably qualify. I'm a Vietnam war veteran so I gave it a try. The insurance for my truck was due the end of Dec. and I've had AIG since 2006 but when they had all that trouble for selling bad mortgage investments in 2008 the insurance div. was spun off and became a company called 21st Century. It was really cheap at first, only half as much as the other high priced companies like Geico. But they were acquired by Farmers who started raising the rates. When I bought the 4Runner and added that to the policy they wanted more than double what it was before but it should be less than double cause I can only drive one at a time and should have got a multiple car discount. Then, when it came due this time they wanted to raise it $60 more and gave me the reason being that I was another year older! Who can afford insurance that goes up $60 a year? I had a big fight with their rep on the phone and told her I wasn't paying more every time their CEO wanted to buy a new boat or another mansion. I had already sent them a check to renew it until I could find a better deal but they returned my check and cancelled the policy. I remembered the one that AARP promotes was cheap last time I checked too so I tried that. They use the Hartford and it is still a little cheaper than the other high priced companies like Geico but not by much. Since Farmers keeps raising the rates and the Hartford is too high I checked with USAA and they are only about 1/3 as much as what all the others are charging for the same coverage! Where Farmers and the other high priced companies all wanted about $625- $1260/yr just for liability on the truck it's only $275 at USAA! Instead of $57/mo just for liability it's only $17 from USAA! I can get full coverage from USAA for what the others want just for liability! While USAA talks about good service I don't care so much about that and just want reasonable prices that I can afford from a company that isn't trying to rip me off!
I've told some of my friends about this and they say it seems too good to be true but I have coverage on my vehicles for a lot less money and insurance ID cards to prove it so I think it works. They have a good website where you can add vehicles and family members or other drivers, change the amount of coverage and add or remove options and it tells what each thing will cost and the total. Then you can pay them with a credit card and get the ID cards to print out right away. It's pretty slick.
They also have motorcycle insurance so I'm going to try that too next time I need to renew it.
BTW, Amica sent me an estimate of $2200! They must be insane!
