Cheapest way to mount a front-mount winch?

I'd like to eventually get a nice bumper, when finances are better. Without spending $600-900+ on some of the sweet bumpers out there, is there a cheap way to get a winch installed onto the front of our trucks?

probably cheaper to find a used bumper.


there are also just winch mounts. not sure what they cost tho.

If you have a fat-lip bumper, just mount the winch behind the stock bumper on a winch plate welded to the frame rails. clean and cheap

I have the same winch as you. I clocked my engagement clutch forward so I could access it more easily.

You don't even need a fat lip bumper to mount the winch. [MENTION=85167]jmildoc[/MENTION] mounted his on that same plate on his 98 Limited....Looks just as nice.
 
Or if you don't have a fat lip bumper you could just extend the frame rails 3in and bolt on a winch plate like this. But then you are kind of screwed over on mounting an aftermarket bumper

Bryanb & singtoe, what winch plate did you use? And where did you mount the box?

:edit: looks like Bryan's is a harbor freight plate?

Did you just butt weld to the end of the rails? I'd be very afraid to stand within 100 yards when winching off that.

Negative. There is tubing sleeved and welded on the inside. You can see just a little of it in the first pic. There is also 3/16x1.5x2.5 scab plate welded on the outside the rails (not pictured):tea:

I guess I should have been a little more detailed in my posting.
