You can also hold down on the odometer reset button then start the engine and your check engine light will go off.

I found out what causes this to happen: Refueling your vehicle while it is running!!!!!! most of the time is your O2 sensor is not bad, you just need to take the neg battery terminal off for a couple min and put it back on. this will reset the code in the vehicles computer.

I tried that procedure, and it only worked for about 45 minutes. These lights have been constantly on for over 18 months, and god knows how many thousands & thousands of miles.

I have the same problem.check the code from scanner and sure enough from bad O2 sensor. Order from amazon (Denso 234-9002 $103). Took me 20 min to install. Very easy.

On trip home from the dealer I noticed the vsc trac and vsc off lights had come on. Checked thru the forum entries and, remembering I had just filled the gas tank, tried simplest fix: take off gas cap and put it back on til it clicked. Fixed the problem. Thanks forum!

Just ahd a key made... lights came on
I have a 2003 4Runner 2wd with the V6 and automatic. Went to the dealer to have a spare key made. Drove away a half hour later and $120 out of pocket. Noted both lights had come on. Coincidence? I don't know. Stopped the vehicle, turned it off. Restarted. Put in drive. Only when the car started to move did both lights come back on.
Took the 4Runner back to the dealer (Fred Anderson, Raleigh NC). Explained. Service manager took the car into the shop. About 30 minutes later, he came out and explained that I had a 'low battery' that had caused the issue initially, and that the sensor would have to be zeroed -- but if I didn't replace the battery, it would just happen again and again.
He swore up and down that the computer they interfaced with for the key programming wasn't the least bit related to the VSC computer. Nor was the fuel/gas tank pressurization related in any electrical manner. I'm having a bit of trouble believing the whole story, but it was the original battery (now ~8 yrs old). So I've replaced the battery and had the sensor zeroed out. The lights have not yet gone back on, so I can't say I was taken or not. Just an odd sequence of events. I sure would like to find a diagnostic flowchart for that sensor.

Issue solved...for me.

I looked it up on line and found this site & post. I tried the gas cap tightening and all, but it didn't seem like it worked. But then, the next morning, when i started the car, the lights went away. Later in the day, i filled up the tank and tightened the cap again and still, no light. Took it to the dealer, since I already booked an appointment with them, and they checked and under the "history" section, saw the code that showed all of the above mentioned lights. they "restructured" the gas cap, reset, and no error showed in the history again. so, for me, the gas cap was the issue. i'm still kinda puzzled how a gas cap could ever be loose, when i tighten it until 3-4 clicks....

Fixed so far
I had been fighting the lights myself. I was getting the 441, 455 and sometimes the 456 codes. The 456 code is a small leak but the others are a gross leak if I remember correctly. I bought a new gas cap from autozone and inspected the fill tube. When doing so I noticed a little corrosion around the opening where the cap seats in. I stuffed the tube with paper towel and took some very fine sand paper to remove the corrosion. Put the new cap on and the lights haven't come on in two weeks. They were coming on every other day. hope this helps anyone in the future.

I've had the same issue with my wife's 2002 4Runner and again with her 2004 4Runner (after she wrecked the 2002). My wife tends to leave the gas cap off from time to time while talking on her cell phone as she hangs up the gas nozzle and juming back into her 4runner. Every time (yes this has happened several times) it was a loose gas cap (or the gas cap was just hanging, not on at all) that caused the Trac Off & VSC Trac + Check Engine lights to all come on. And yes, she freaks out each time like most folks do. After tightening the gas cap, the lights go away in a couple of days. If having the lights on after you tighten the gas cap bothers you, you can simply disconnect the battery (+ or – terminal, either one) for a few seconds and then reconnect it. This makes the vehicle computer, basically re-boot and ”see” that the pressure in the gas tank is correct and that the cap is now tight and on correctly (sealing). A Toyota dealer master tech told me that there are a lot of unscrupulous dealers and auto mechanics out there that make a lot of money simply tightening the gas caps, running the engine until it heats up giving the car time to build the pressure up in the gas tank to where it needs to be and then resetting the codes to get rid of the lights. Then they simply charge a few hundred dollars saying they fixed the problem and the owner is grateful that it "only cost a few hundred dollars" when all along, they could have done the job themselves for nothing.
Now there is always the chance that it could be a leak in the Evap system either through the pressure relief valve on top of the gas tank, or a vacuum tubing leak (like the Best Buy screw hole leak, but that Toyota master tech, I talked to, said that he estimated that 80% - 90% of the time it was the gas cap not on or not tight or on crooked that caused the problem all along.
Just my two cents worth.

1998 4 runner ck engine light stays on
I posted this but don't see it on the site, so I am posting it again. I had my timing belt, valve cover gaskets, and plenum gaskets replaced. Now my ck engine light stays on and the codes are 0300, 0302, and 0305. All have to do with the cylinders misfiring. No problems before the work was done. I replaced the gas cap, all 3 coil packs, wires, and plugs. Reset the codes and they came back again. Anyone know the problem? Please help.

I just had the same 3 lights come on my 01 model..I'm 700 miles from home, but after reading this thread and a few others, It seems like I have a chance of making it home; vehicle is running fine. I just checked the gas cap; it was tight..actually lots of pressure on it; probably due to elevation change, home is around 400 ft above sea level..I'm somewhere around 3200 right now and have not refueled at this elevation. This is a trip I make a few times a month..elevation has never been an issue in the past.
My question: Where is the OBD2 connector? (I'm a new Toyota owner)
I found a connector under the hood marked (Diagnostic), but the pin line-up doesn't look at all like the OBD2 connector on my jeeps and scan tool I have at home, which have a trapezoid-shaped plug. I took a quick glance under the dash and didn't see one there..
I was thinking about hitting an Autozone to borrow their scan tool to see what's up...but want to know where to hook it once I get there..

VSC, ABS Lights - Suspension change - Fixes
This forum is great and this thread was very helpful. I had my suspension changed when my original Xreas was poor at 230 000 km. The garage that did it screwed something up and through this forum i figured it was the ABS Sensor Wires. I tested them for continuity and sure enough they broke both front wires. They would not make good on it. I spliced in wires - reconnected, didn't work - re checked and one of the wires wasnt plugged in all the way. Great did the zero point calibration and the ABS light went off and the ABS worked but the traction control did not work and the 2 VSC lights were still on.
So what i did was disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to reset the ECU - then did the zero point calibration... and VOILA!! it worked.http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/happy/happy0159.gif

I also figured out that if you just unhook the abs sensors in the engine bay you can test the two leads back to the speed sensor with a electrical tester at 2000K ohm's and i got a reading of about 350 - enough to tell me that the wires and abs sensors were working -without taking the tire off.
