Check those front balljoints..........

just did my yearly cv axle change and noticed one of the four bolts on the driver lbj was GONE:shrug:

everyone needs to go and check these things asap

I posted a video a while back on checking/diagnosing problems with lower ball joints.. basically checking for any play with a pry bar

Is that a valid method? I finished installing my lift today and i tried to get it to budge and it had absolutely zero play. I think im okay yes?

VERY BAD Ball Joints - WATCH THIS!!! - YouTube

ignore the lady lol

I have seen kits on ebay that include all tre, lbj, ubj for under 150 bucks and I just got both oem lbj only for 188$,(90$ ea)you cant tell me a oem joint is the same quality as a 30 buck generic, but as I haul my three kids around I would have to ask WHY would I cut corners on such an item?By the way napa premuim 555 LBJ is actually HIGHER than oem here.(129 ea).Just get oem, mine have 222000 miles on em!

we've been through this.....my napa "555's" had surface rust on them within a weeks after install, that among a few other things keeps them ff par with OEM's, go look at your 13 year old 200k original LBJ's...not surface rust there... not saying the napa ones won't get you through 80~100k but they are not the same quality as OEM, production lines will often make runs after supplying the OEM's but often use inferior materials and coatings and a lot less quality control , so even if the casting is the same, and it looks the same doesn't make it the same....i don't think anyone is going to die immediately from a moog or SOB ball joint, but you might have to change them out sooner, the way i look at it is use OEM and worry about swapping the engine or trans out before you got to deal with LBJ's again.....as the orginals last 150k or more, lol, doubt your 238k motor is going to make it another 150~200k...

Got the timing belt job finished. Also did the water pump, seals, thermostat, hoses, radiator, and belts.
Glad I did the pump, it was leaking, the last time it was done was the last timing job at 89k, looks like the previous tech had just used RTV to seal it up.

I also got the entire right suspension(Were the Ball Joints failed) stripped down.
Just need to install all the new bushings, new lower control arm and new ball joints.
Also going to do new sway bar links because the right side one was snapped.

Got those old bushings out.

i had to remove my lower A-Arm bushing too after the ass-wipes at Less Schwab didn't tighten the bolt that holds the lower A-Arm to the frame during there alignment job.... i'd hear these odd clunking sounds at slow turns on the right side and then i saw the mangled remains of that bushing.....

i was furious! :sniper:

i should have taken pictures and called a lawyer.... but stupid me i just fixed it myself and haven't been back to less schwab since.....

In the vein of this thread, may I ask for a few educated comments on these pics of my lcj's? I see what looks like a break in the rubber covers on both sides? But I couldn't get anything to move when I jacked up the frame and checked for play via like that short video.

yeah just go ahead and get yourself a pair of OEM Toyota LBJs... those things have seen better days and with the boots cracking like that they are not packed in grease like they should be anymore.

All done except for an alignment after Christmas.

A note;
If you plan on replacing the Lower Control arm bushing you will have to move the rack& pinion out of the way to remove the sleeves and bolts on the control arm itself.
